Week One In Review

The first week was exhausting. There was a lot of standing and waiting for results. This whole process on Tuesday of being on stage and finding out if you're safe, then going off the stage and coming back on the stage. Then going backstage again. Just that walking process. I'd rather be dancing. We've never had that format before. And if you are not necessarily with the lowest score, but you're being drawn out of a hat to perform last you're standing the entire two hours and then have to dance right away with no warm-up.

But it's over and I'm happy that Misty and I are in the middle of the pack. It's just the first week and you know it's a marathon. Everybody is being paced. There are a few people that are up there that shouldn't have been there, which is fine by us. It just goes to show that in a couple more weeks the strongest couples are going to emerge. I think Brooke, Lance, Misty and Maurice are going to come out as the frontrunners. I just have a feeling. Everybody is a tough competitor. We just need to do our thing and enjoy the process.

It's all about what the viewers have to say. Judges are important but they're not the final decision, so to speak. I'm glad they're not just giving out high scores to everyone yet. That's going to throw the celebrities off a little bit. It also takes away from what a nine and ten actually represent. Which is really good or perfection. The celebs can't do that yet.

With Misty, I've got total say over the choreography and the costumes. The music is a little difficult because they don't give us a choice. We can always request songs at the beginning of the season but its a difficult process because the show can't always get the rights to them. Audiences do respond more to certain songs, it's extremely important. It has to be fun, it has to be something people know and recognize and it has to represent the dance. For example -- the mambo that Kim Kardashian did to "Baby Got Back." I don't know what Mark was thinking. He said that originally they gave him... I think it was Fergie's song "Clumsy" which is not a mambo at all. And having it sung by the orchestra would probably not be very good either. So "Baby Got Back" was his second choice. He kind of went, "The first one is horrible. The second one people know." So that's what his thinking was. So we're talking about doing whatever you can. But that was not fun at all. He's going to try and do better this week.

As for who went home, I wasn't surprised. I think it was a coin toss between Jeff , Ted and Rocco. Or Cloris, who is the laughter of Dancing with the Stars. Obviously she is not a very good dancer. But I love her comedy act. I think Cloris is making the show. Everybody is going to enjoy it and then we're going to let her go in a few weeks because it's going to be about serious dancing.

But other than that, I was glad that Misty did great this week. I gave her a chance to do a lot of solo work during the mambo to show everybody that she can do it. She's confident. She's not just a jock. There's a dancer somewhere in there. We just have to look for it and get it out. We practiced a lot and she did great. And actually, the ending wasn't supposed to be completely solo like it was, but she did so well, I said why not?

This coming week Misty and I are doing the Paso Doble. I think it's going to be an easier dance to do for her because it doesn't require any hip action. Also because it is an intense dance. So the comments from the judges that her facial expressions are too hard are actually going to work to her advantage.
