It made this long-time Mary Tyler Moore Show fan deliriously happy to see that the power of Oprah has been used for good. The powers that be over at 20th Century Fox have finally seen fit to appease the masses and release the final three seasons of the show on DVD. The first four sets became quickly available, but the final three had been stalled with no date in sight. But thanks to Oprah and her hour-long MTM lovefest this pat spring (in which she transformed her stage into WJM's newsroom and Mary's apartment and talked to the entire cast), the studio has taken notice and will put the last three sets on their DVD calendar (though an official date has yet to be set).
There's been space on my DVD shelf just collecting dust for the last several years, as I not-so patiently awaited my next installment. Neither Nick at Nite or TV Land (who's now concentrating on newer shows and originals) are currently airing MTM and I need my fix. Sure, I can watch episodes from the DVD sets that I have, but where am I going to see the legendary "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode? How would I see Georgette giving birth in Mary's apartment? I am longing to rewatch the touching series finale and here the cast's heartbreaking rendition of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary." And until now, I've been basically out of luck.
The series, which originally aired when I was too young too appreciate it (some ran before I was born), has always been one that could make me laugh. When I discovered the reruns in high school, I would drive my mother crazy with my loud peels of laughter. It says something that a show that could resonate with a girl (albeit a TV-obsessed girl) more than 20 years after its original airing. And even now, close to 40 years later, this show can still make me hoot. Now if only I could laugh inappropriately along with Mary, when Chuckles' ridiculous death hit her, I'd be truly happy.
I've seen some of the TV on DVD that is out there, and if they can manage to put out all seven seasons of Saved by the Bell: The New Class, I think it about time that an Emmy-award winning show like Mary gets its due. I'm glad that someone finally wised up. Oh, and thanks, Oprah.

The "Mary Tyler Moore" show currently airs Monday nights on American Life Network. I can't say I've seen any episodes much past 1972, but since it only airs once a week, it may be taking a rather long time to get through the series.
By the way, I am thrilled that TPTB at 20th Century Fox are finally putting out the remaining seasons. It's about time!
