When they say politics is a joke, they might be speaking literally in Minnesota. That's where comedy writer and sitcom star Al Franken is running for a U.S. Senate seat he may well win this week.
The Saturday Night Live veteran already had better luck there getting the Democratic nomination than he did in the Nielsen ratings, where his 1998 NBC sitcom Lateline failed to make the grade. Even when Franken means business about current events -- as in such bestselling books as Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot -- he doesn't take himself quite so seriously. The curly haired Minnesota native played slapstick lunkhead in Lateline, which is out on DVD and well worth another look as a rare satire of TV news and current events.
Where else can you see former Congressional leader Dick Gephardt and Clinton labor secretary Robert Reich warbling a duet of Buddy Hackett's Music Man ditty Shipoopi?
Or Franken getting bopped in the noggin by an airbag while reporting a car consumer story?
Or early work from such TV stalwarts-to-be as Megyn Price (Rules of Engagement), Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan) and Sanaa Lathan, who went on to a big movie splash in Love and Basketball before returning to TV as a deviously cutting doctor on Nip/Tuck?
All three characters worked with Franken's hapless Al Freundlich -- pronounced Froynd-lick, amusing in and of itself -- at a late-night news show led by Robert Foxworth's haughty anchor. Earnestly reporting from the field was Freundlich, with Price as the producer perpetually saving his ass, Ferrer as the showrunner trying to keep everything together, and Lathan as the booker sarcastically commenting on it all. (There's also Ajay Naidu's eager production assistant, making this one of the most multicultural sitcom casts ever.)
You might think Lateline would be too inside a joke to appeal to the masses, but that's not really the case. TV and Washington politics provide the background but not the point. Franken's character was forever getting involved in basic sitcom scrapes. Angling for a promotion. Going ridiculously undercover. Facing jail if he doesn't reveal sources. (Shades of Mary Tyler Moore!) There was also Foxworth sucking up to network bigwigs, Price auditioning at another news network (deliriously named MFMSN), and interns getting crushes on staffers.
Of course, politically savvy viewers looking for topical humor probably weren't thrilled with so much silliness, despite the amazing roster of real-life cameo guests -- Ralph Nader, G. Gordon Liddy, Barney Frank, Jerry Falwell, Michael Dukakis, Jocelyn Elders, Alan Simpson. And sitcom fans may have been put off by all that "relevance," harebrained as it was played. The scripts' straddling of comedy and current events always seemed a bit unsteady, despite the presence of certified humor smarties like Franken, co-creator John Markus (The Larry Sanders Show) and director Andy Ackerman (Seinfeld).
But when has politics ever been the ticket to sitcom success? TV has racked up quite a few relevant runs even shorter than Lateline's (two half-seasons totaling 12 episodes aired by NBC; all 17 produced half-hours are in the DVD set). In 1985, Patty Duke played the first female president -- maybe Hillary Clinton was watching -- in ABC's awkward spring replacement series Hail to the Chief. Fox' earliest days as a network brought us another acclaimed actor, George C. Scott, as Mr. President in the 1987 dud about a newly elected chief executive.
One political satire actually did fire on all cylinders except the Nielsen numbers. And that's no surprise considering it came from renowned All in the Family producer Norman Lear and co-creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, right before they launched Friends. NBC's 1992 sitcom The Powers That Be was a wicked farce starring John Forsythe (Dynasty) as an oblivious U.S. senator and Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men) as his ambitious wife. David Hyde Pierce made his pre-Frasier mark as a mumblingly suicidal congressman married to their neurotic daughter (Valerie Mahaffey, Northern Exposure), with smart young Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock From the Sun) as their put-upon son. There's even Peter MacNicol (Ally McBeal, 24) as their officious press aide and Elizabeth Berridge (The John Larroquette Show) as their oft-pummeled maid. Even Cloris Leachman showed up as the senator's intrusive mother.
NBC stupidly aired the show on Saturday night, which hasn't hosted network success for decades. So the fun for those who found it didn't last long. Just 21 episodes. But with all that star power, how come The Powers That Be isn't out on DVD? (Or at least streaming online someplace.) As an equal-opportunity offender, this is a show that could get everybody's vote.
