The Dresden Files: Great, Now I Have to Read Books

In late 2006, still suffering from Angel withdrawal, I started seeing commercials on the Sci Fi channel for The Dresden Files, starring Paul Blackthorne (Lipstick Jungle) as freelance wizard Harry Dresden. It looked like it had a real Angel vibe about it -- this is before Moonlight, mind you -- and I started watching it with my wife whenever I could (she was instantly hooked). We caught most of the first 12 episodes... and then the series was canceled. I know, there are a dozen of the original Jim Butcher-penned books out there, some of which inspired episodes of the TV show, but Blackthorne was delightfully roguish, and I can't bring myself to read any book whose cover shows Harry wearing a black duster -- it's a little too high-school role-playing club for me, and I speak from experience. Luckily, I can watch the 12 duster-free episodes over and over on Hulu, or pick them all up (with the original uncut pilot) here. Check out the first one below.

I actually just watched all 12 episodes in the space of 2 days, I was hooked (incidentally it was the books that led me to the tv show). Still one of the more bitter SciFi cancellations in my mind, especially since the ratings were not bad! Great show, fun characters, good acting (But you should really read the books, at the very least you get the history & there is much more emotional depth in them)

Seriously? The cover art is what's turning you off from the series? Just buy the old covers if it bothers you that much, because you are missing out on one of the greatest series! I accidentally picked up book number eight when I discovered the series, and immediately had to go back and read all the others.

The first couple are somewhat slow, as they are setting up the world and introducing the characters, but the books steadily pick up from there. My husband and I also had the opportunity to meet the author last summer and he is an amazing person with a great gift for story-telling. I'm telling you, you will not regret picking up this series!

From someone who read the books first: The show is NOTHING. Horrible adaptation of brilliant books, the casting were among the few things they got somewhat right but the rest was butchered (no pun intended). Read the books. Read them now. I'll wait here, it shouldn't take you long since they're impossible to put down. And you're welcome, in advance.

I watched the series and then got into the books. I like both, but have to say Terrence Mann is way better than some silly skull with glowy eye-holes.

I got into the show since I liked Paul Blackthorne from 24. Loved it. Want it on DVD. I'm afraid to read the books since like Wires, people have said the TV show is a pale adaptation and I want to preserve my liking of the series.

I enjoyed the TV series for Paul Blackthorne and Terrance Mann. As a big fan of the books, I was a bit meh because of some changes, a few of which I thought were major (the complete overhaul of Karen, for instance).

Still, the show had promise and I thought PB was a perfect Harry Dresden, to the point that I now imagine him as I read the books. ;-)

And ITA with the comment about Terrance Mann being a better take on the skull. It certainly made for a better adaptation on TV, as the skull would have been too campy.

I actually started listening to the Dresden Files audio books for the same reason (Angel withdrawal) and because I found out that James Marsters was the one reading the audio books.

So far, eight of the eleven books are now available as audio books (with one more scheduled for release later this year and two more in 2010).

James Marsters does a really great job creating different voices for each character, so give those a try after watching the series!

It's a rare feat for the book to be worse than the movie/tv show, so if possible I try to save the books for last so that I see them as an improvement. When I go the other way around, it seems like a downgrade.

I've read all the books, including the short stories, I've met and talked with Jim Butcher about both the books and the show, he was a fan of the show and in the episode where Justin was brought back, he was the coroners assistant standing behind the coffin of the dug up justin. Anyway, I can answer alot of questions if any and as far as the duster goes, it has "magic" cast on it to make it vitually bullet proof as well as other proofs and the leather one is a gift from someone harry cares a great deal about. I can go on, but again fan of both.

Who can we contact (other than ABC, who just doesn't care)about getting Nothing Sacred put onto DVD? How about Picket Fences? These were 2 of the most interesting shows I've ever seen...they raised many questions about religion and faith, and were very positive about life and people even though they raised the questions. They were both the water cooler shows at work...EVERYBODY watched, just so we could talk about each episode and what it brought up. I know dozens of people personally who would buy the complete DVDs of both these series! Couldn't someone buy the rights and make a lot of money releaseing these?

Read the books, seriously. They are out of this world good! ;)

I got hooked on Paul Blackthorne's charms, then picked up the first book. I don't think I've ever fangirled a book series so hard before!

I read the books first, and I liked them both equally. Even bob. I loved the TV show's original adaptation, and it was just about equal to Bob, who man... you just cant beat a sex crazed sprit. The thing is, they are both based on different premises; one being a dead sorcerer, the other an air spirit that is basically like a supernatural Google. So two different things, that you can just like as much.
I viewed the TV show as different as the book, like books between books, even though that doesnt really make sense, but hey, what the heck.
I loved it. Watch and read. Read and watch. Doesnt really matter

It was mentioned in the story that the show isn't available. A quick web search found it on Amazon. DVD("http://www.amazon.com/Dresden-Files-Complete-First-Season/dp/B000QUEQ4U/iagonet")

I'd read most of the books that were out at the time before seeing the show, and so was both pleased and disappointed by the show. You can't beat Terrence Mann as Bob. He's fantastic, and has ruined BookBob for me forever. Still, I love bookMurphy and the book characters that weren't in the TV series. They are very different, but both enjoyable.
