As announced earlier this week, the powers that be over at Fox have given the go-ahead to a sci-fi Western pilot. Seems a mite strange, given that Fox completely mishandled the last sci-fi Western they tried to air just a few years back. Not only did Fox cancel the short-lived Joss Whedon series Firefly, but they also aired episodes out of order and generally ignored the show's rabid fanbase. What's to say they won't pull the same antics with a new, similarly themed show?
Not that I'm bitter or anything. While I enjoy Whedon's work, I initially found Firefly hard to get into. Perhaps it's because the pilot aired at the end of the show's run. It wasn't until I saw the episodes on DVD that I truly appreciated the series in all its glory. Well, except for that horrible "Message" episode, but everyone is entitled to one off installment. But still, while Fox appears to be attempting to make good with Whedon and his loyal fans by giving Dollhouse a sophomore season, it is still hard to imagine them creating a sci-fi western that's half as as good as Firefly was.
The Hollywood Reporter story says that Fox execs were specifically looking for a "revamped Western" this season -- are they only trying to do it because they've seen the errors in their ways in the past? Did someone over there just watch a few episodes of The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. and think they needed a show to fill that void in the TV market? And how can they ever find anyone better than Captain Tight Pants? And if you don't know who Captain Tight Pants is, well, I strongly suggest that you watch the pilot of Firefly below and get to know the show's grumpy protagonist Mal.
All of the episodes of Firefly are available on Hulu (you'll have to borrow or rent the theatrical film Serenity, though), which I mention because chances are you're going to want more. This show is like potato chips... once you really get an episode or two into this smart series set in space, but without aliens or robots or anything, it's hard to turn away. The show's appeal isn't the sci-fi aspect, but its simple plot of humans on various worlds after a war, with a diverse crew traveling on their beaten-down ship in order to make cash however possible.
And the stellar cast and unique characters are what really made this show. From the aforementioned Captain Mal (played by Nathan Fillion), tough mercenary Jayne (Adam Baldwin), adorably quirky ship's mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Statie), second-in-command Zoe (Gina Torres), pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), space prostitute Inara (Morena Baccarin), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), troubled kid genius River (Summer Glau) and Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) who tried to bring some religion to the crew. Also, there were some recurring appearances from a pre-Mad Men Christina Hendricks as a con woman. What more could you want?
Their adventures are fabulous, and with smart writing, fun dialogue and some great gunfights, the entire show was really something special. Its hard to imagine anything topping it, and I'm sort of dreading seeing Fox even try again.

I just watched all of Firefly last weekend (it's kinda nice that there's only a few episodes in that respect) and then watched Serenity on NetFlix...I love it everytime I see it. Definitely a good example of a lost opportunity.
'The Message' introduced us to Jayne's hat and is therefore awesome!
Joss Whedon is a genius. There, I said it.
FYI! Serenity is available in Netflix's "Watch It Now" group of movies. So you needn't leave the comfort of your couch to get your fix of ALL Firefly and Serenity had to offer!
I love Joss Whedon as much as most TWoPers, but I could never get into Firefly. The main reason was, when I saw the first episode I thought, "Well, that was ok but I've already seen Cowboy BeBop." Maybe that's what Fox is going for now?
ARGH! Firefly was AMAZING. I will never watch this show. Simply because I'm *STILL* pissed off.
Every time I watch Firefly, it is awesomer and awesomer!
You can check out Serenity for free from many public libraries - heck, some of them have Firefly too. Librarians must have good taste! ;)
Seriously? Fuck you, Fox. Fuck you.
(I'm obviously still bitter.)
I hate Fox, they had a great show and killed it by putting it on friday night and we all missed out on years of great sci-fi.
@Cat
So. True.
Any episode with such a cunning hat gets a pass.
What the heck? Have the execs at Fox been smoking crack? What makes them think they can create and promote a sci-fi western successfully this time? Probably the success of the new Star Trek movie this summer gave someone a bright idea... I only hope they treat this potential show better than they did Firefly. Speaking of Joss, is it just me, or is it a crime that the best episode so far of Dollhouse NEVER AIRED ON TV? Epitaph One was brilliant and gives me hope for the new season.
I'm with Bzork,I'm still bitter. I try to avoid Fox at all times and secretly hope that one day the network will fail. Too harsh?
The only reason I'm attempting to watch a series television show on Fox again is Joss Whedon loyalty for Dollhouse and the awesomeness of Glee. I try my hardest to avoid anything they put out.
The awful trashiness of their reality tv and their mishandling of series television makes me hate them with a passion.
At least it's Fedak from 'Chuck'. The series might actually work. Though not as awesome as Firefly. That was lightning in a bottle, with a perfect ensemble cast.
Fox must seriously have a grudge against its best SF shows. It also screwed over loyal viewers of Space: Above and Beyond with the same BS of shifting the show so that it was hard to find. I didn't watch Firefly when it aired, mostly because I don't like Westerns, but also because I could never find the damned thing. When the DVDs came out, I did watch it and become a loyal, slavering fan. It's one of the best shows Fox ever aired.
You should also say Zac Efron plays a younger version of a character. That would pull some girls in to watch this series with a great cast and great storylines.
Lezlee, I thought he ripped off parts of "Outlaw Star" for this show, but not that you mention it, yeah, it seems like Joss took the things he liked from both shows and recycled them on to here.
Come to think of it, with regards to Firefly, I think this is one case where the public got it right.
You know what I've been bitter about for a while? Firefly fans who got a MOVIE of their canceled TV show, and still complain.
The Show was awesome! Why would fox in their idiocy even think about bringing another show into the light without giving Firefly another chance. Didnt they learn there lesson with family guy? (Not the same) But the fan base ressurected the show. Hey Higher ups, check out sales of dvd's and the Serenity movie. Something should go ding ding, in your well schooled brains that, " I think we have something here with FIREFLY"
Is it bad that "The Message" was one of my favorite eps?
you are correct
awesome
I'd be happy if they revived the series and did yearly made for TV movies...in the vein of B5 movies, but make that good. :-)
Bring back Firefly!
"The Message" was a fantastic episode IMO
Er, the movie did not make back its budget until its release on DVD. Which in most circles, would be considered a flop. So that's probably not the best argument to use with Fox.
Have read the comments for brilliant but cancelled - the shows everyone was whining over makes me wonder if any of you have the least notion of what 'brilliant' means because none of the programs mentioned fit the defination. Good grief, grieving over Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Lame, lame, lame! The most interesting of that program was David Boreanz as Angel, and him in love with Buffy? Come on - that was the most unlikely fit, and shows the acting talent of David Borenz that he could pull off that twosome
without either lauging hysterically or asking for a bucket. There was no brilliance in that show. I am ecstatic that it is gone, and hope to high heaven that particular actress is never to be seen again.
And would like to make a quick comment on HOUSE - it has the most bumbling, stumbling, got to hold-each-other-up set of supposedly best in their profession doctors that I hope never to run into. That anyone would watch this show and call it excellent or even good blows me away. Please, God, keep me and mine safe from such as these doctors forever. Showing the private turmoils of these characters makes no excuse and musters no sympathy whatsoever for being so lousy at their profession. I think this show tries to emphasize the brilliance of these characters by the fact that they can even think of all the possibilities for illnesses of their patients', but it only shows their ignorance and inability to diagnose and press forward to treatment, and how they cannot make a diagnosis without the help of their fellow losers, and even then the diagnosis turns out to be WRONG. They even killed a patient for pete's sake! Please get it off. Or at least someone who is a better actor than Hugh Laurie take over his part. But this show I think is better off being taken out the back door and shot! One of the worst shows on tv anywhere. When is FOX going to admit it. Hey, I have an idea - why don't write to names and plots of possible programs, put them inside a paper bag, and let one year old babies choose which ones are going to be made. Bet you would get far better than the current offerings. Yep - I bet you would.
The Message was a fantastic episode
you are corret
Yeah - I agree
I find it a crazy coincidence that I watched this series again the last two days before I even noticed this article here.
While I agree with the above comments of how insanely amazing and brilliant the show was and how it is ok to be bitter about the cancellation, I also want to point out the shame of lost potential it had.
Sure we got a movie but it didn't do anything for the plotlines they could have explored with the television series. The movie was closure but not enough to answer my questions regarding the little hints to secrets and future plot lines the show had in store for fans.
Such a shame.
Er, they'd claim that the movie dealt with River's origins, the root of her problems, explained the Reivers, and mended the fences between Mal and Inara--but yeah, the film was a lost opportunity. Here's the thing. I love Chuck, so while I'm rather disgusted that Fox didn't give Firefly a chance to develop, I don't think I'd sacrifice three seasons of Chuck (the equivalent of a season and a half, maybe two seasons) for a two season abbreviated run of Firefly.
I enjoy farting.
Seriously Fox unless you are thinking about bringing back Firefly dont bother.
Is this new show called Cowboy Bebop?
{only the anime fans get this}
What is Anime?
Bring back Firefly! Are you nutts canceling it. The only reason you didn't have great ratings is because most of us that know what it is now, did'nt know it was even out there when you had it on the air! I only learned the show existed after you canceled it. DONT BOTHER making another Firefly style show, we want FIREFLY, it is charactor based and you certainly aren't going to replace Mal or Simon, or River Tam. Bring it back@!

Fox sucks. They consistently mismanage shows, canceling them before they even get started. If it weren't for House and The Simpsons, I'd never watch Fox.
FOX Blows Chunks. They are such complete IDIOTS. FIRELY was awesome. Dollhouse sadly doesn't hold a candle to Firefly. It is a shame that FOX ever picks up these type of shows, because they mishandle them so badly. Look forward to the day when cable channels start expanding the $$ they will pay for good shows. The networks are so limiting.
Fringe is pretty spiffy, but I think the foxtards will kill that one too.
