Joss Whedon's short-lived sci-fi series Firefly has been off the air for seven years, and its feature-film follow-up, Serenity, has been out for four, but the pain of the show's passing still smarts. While Serenity provided much-needed closure, it only made us love/miss Firefly all the more, so when we saw that a behind-the-scenes book of photos, props, artwork and original stories was coming out, we made sure to get ahold of it. Firefly: Still Flying comes out on May 25 from Titan Books, but we've already read it cover to cover. And you know what? We learned some stuff we didn't know about one of our favorite shows ever. Prepare for information upload!
1. There's a New Firefly Movie Coming!
...Kind of. Joss Whedon has given his blessing to a fan film, Browncoats: Redemption, which chronicles the adventures of another transport ship crew in the post-Serenity 'verse. Since the film is not-for-profit, with all proceeds going to charity, they've had to rely on volunteer crew members and free shooting time at Wild West theme parks. This sounds like it could be entertaining in soooo many extremely different ways.
2. Jayne's Dead
In one of four new stories written by former Firefly writers, we visit a cranky old Mal Reynolds, who's turned the Serenity over to Zoe and retired, unable to deal with the attention the events of the movie brought to him. In the story, he finds out that Jayne, who embraced the attention and became a hero millionaire, went to bed drunk with his gun Vera and accidentally shot himself in his sleep. On the bright side, Simon and Kaylee have gotten married and have two brilliant kids. Although we're a little worried that Auntie River is their babysitter...
3. We Almost Got "Bad Horse" Six Years Early
One story idea Whedon had for Firefly was for mutant animals to run rampant on a planet. The plan was that cow DNA -- shipped to distant farm planets to be grown, rather than real cows -- would somehow get corrupted. However, Whedon had pre-emptively assumed the network would make him choose a different, more exciting animal, like a horse. Mutant, man-eating horses running amok? Hopefully, this story idea will feature prominently in any Dr. Horrible sequel.
4. Fillion is a Major Prankster
Not only did Nathan Fillion kidnap the propmaster's toy monkey and send it on an Amelie-style cross-country journey with his parents, he also put hand lotion on the door handle of Jewel Staite's trailer and got ahold of several embarrassing childhood pictures of Alan Tudyk, sticking them on the walls at Wash's wake. Do not turn your back on Nathan Fillion.
5. Their Guns Were Flashlights
The Firefly props department made some new, space-age guns for the show, but many were pre-existing props from L.A. prop rental houses. One such gun, the "Lassiter" (named for Pixar animator John Lasseter) from the episode "Trash," had been around for at least a decade, and was made out of an old, rechargeable flashlight attached to a toy pistol grip.
6. Kaylee and Inara are Besties
Not only do actresses Jewel Staite and Morena Baccarin have the same birthday, Baccarin was also the maid of honor at Staite's wedding. However, to shock people on set, they would often say incredibly mean things to each other. Example: "I am so sick of looking at your face." Yikes.
7. Half the Crew Was From Buffy and Angel
We knew that some of Whedon's established writers transitioned to the new series, but the stunt coordinator? The location manager? Even the stand-in for Fillion and Adam Baldwin had spent three years standing in for David Boreanaz on Angel before getting this gig. We're surprised there was anyone left to run the other shows.
8. Actors Get the Best Souvenirs
When actor Ron Glass left the show, he was given Shepherd Book's Holy Bible, the one that had been personally annotated by Summer Glau in character as River Tam. That's kind of cool, but Adam Baldwin got the best present of all -- the head of his statue from the episode "Jaynestown." Both items were later auctioned off for charity.
9. A Firefly Musical Episode Was Not Implausible
No, Whedon wasn't planning one or anything like that, but the musically inclined showrunner apparently likes to sing on set, and during one break in shooting he started singing the theme from Oklahoma! Immediately, Nathan Fillion, Fillion's stand-in and a half-dozen others joined in, and they sang the whole song through before returning to work. We're imagining a hallucinatory coolant leak on board the Serenity, with feelings expressed through song and, in River's case, interpretive dance.
10. Firefly Has Been Watched in Space
It's only to be expected that there are astronauts who like Firefly; they are, after all, mostly übernerd scientists who love space. But to have actual photographic evidence of "Browncoat" astronaut Steven Swanson and his DVD boxed set floating in zero-G is one giant leap for nerddom.

Jayne is dead? Damn I always hoped that in a doistant future (like maybe Season 2 or 3 he and River would hook up! I could totally see it going that way. Well ...maybe she killed him with her brain after all!
Oh lord people, give it up already. This overrated trifle isn't beyond 6 feet under. Bringing it back in articles and raving about isn't going to change it's status to 'lost classic'. It's still a 'cult favorite', at best, and a tiny one at that. Let's all take a deep breath, Whedonites, and move.
Sorry, meant to say, *is* beyond 6 feet under.
Where's the "Firefly sucked ass and was Buffy in Space with a bunch of talentless hacks and script from hell"-fact?
Oh wait, everybody who isn't retarded already knew this :D
It is a shame Jayne died like that, I always expected him to go doing something incredubly stupid but amazinly brave.
I think it's sort of perfect that Jayne died by the hands of Vera. He would have wanted to go out like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid but I think it's more poetic.
And in regards to the haters, if you disliked the show so much, why are you bothering to read the article?
You continue to like your stuff, we'll continue to like our stuff, and we'll just agree to disagree.
Name calling is really un-necessary.
...Firefly was ANYTHING but Buffy in space. It was (and still is) in a category all its own.
@ Jill
that reminds me.....
BRING BACK 6 FEET UNDER!!!!
There are also comics books continuing the story of Serenity. There are two out now and two more coming from Dark Horse Comics!
It's so funny to me when ppl click on articles of shows they loathe just to complain about them. I'm a Firefly fan, not a Whedon fan. You want to talk about overrated shows? Look no further than Buffy. I'm not saying it was awful, but it certainly wasn't absolute, total genius like everyone says it was.
Wow, only took til the second posting for the assinine trolling to start, I'd say that's some kind of record, but it doubtlessly isn't.
@AfterGlow (and @Jill)
And where are the shameless trolls attempting to be edgy and cool by bashing a show based solely on the name in the article's headline?
Oh wait, there they are. :D
Holy Crap! Thank you so much for giving Browncoats: Redemption a mention in here.
Sweet!! Bless you for publishing this! I feel a Firefly marathon with Serenity culmination coming on. Woo!
Love it! (The show, not the trolling).
Nah, I read the article first. Still a crap overrated show. And what I said still holds up.
I know! Next time, I'll try and be the first, if only because it'll p*ss you off even more. I'm just offering my opinion, sweetie, that's all. It's funny how people who don't accept others opinions try to throw around words like 'trolling' to discredit or cast our views in a negative way. Deal with it, bee-yotch.
Jill---go frak yourself. Respectively.
Seconded.
I still miss this show!
Thanks for this. Makes sense that Jayne might well embrace the hero worship :-). Jayne's head is in Texas; it was recently photographed with both Adam Baldwin and its current owner.
@ Jill - So you came to read an article about a TV show you already know you consider crap and overrated, just so you could make douche-y comments about how crap it is, and how much better YOUR favourite show is, but you're not a troll? Uh, okay. If you say so.
I'm with Jessa Frak you!
Ooo, you kiss you mom with that mouth? Maybe you and Sunny should get together and teach etiquette classes...
The article was actually one of the funniest things I have read in a long while, actually. Granted, it was unintentionally hilarious, but there you go. And...I think you have me confused with someone else. I never mentioned another TV show. To use your own words, you are a 'frakking' moron.
Thirded!
nothing about mal and inara being together? sad =(
Jill, don't bother. Whedonites stopped listening to reason years ago.
Again, going into a thread about something you already feel so negatively about is simply an effort in harassing others. It's idiotic. If you can't see that then I wonder who the 'frakking' moron is.
I am dorkishly pleased about the Simon and Kaylee + babies. With crazy aunt River.
Jill, Wayne, et al:
That's a great story, bro.
To Jill: Hate to tell you, but the fact that you feel the need to respond to each and every comment sent your way in a sarcastic and derogatory tone means you are, in fact, trolling. If you don't like the show that's fine, but being negative in a primarily positive setting is kind of an immature way to act. It's like you want to pick a fight.
To this article: I laughed at the "Bad Horse" bit, I didn't know that, and I cried a little at the mention of Jayne dying... oh, Jayne, you big lug. I also am amused at the idea of Auntie River babysitting SImon and Kaylee's kids. Ha!
You said actually twice.
And also, you're a cunt.
Sunnie and I can get together can kick your a$$...how's that?
LOL dumbass
People will stop writing articles about Firefly/Serenity when it stops being discovered and loved by new fans every month.
So, never.
Sorry.
@Jill
The fact that you remain here continuing to insult and disparage only cements your existence as a troll. Congratulations.
Oh honey, lay off the crack. Don't waste what few brain cells you still have left.
Oh fuck off, troll. Why do you idiots come to these types of articles if the only thing you're going to do is purposely troll the people who care about it?
Tell you what; show me another TV show that got canceled for stupid reasons before a full season had been produced that went on to produce multiple comic book tie-ins, a feature film, and a continuing line of future media, with no end of the momentum in sight.
You know why you can't do it? Because Firefly was lightning in a fucking bottle and you're just a ignorant troll who will say anything to get a rise.
Well, I was talking about a show, and being unnecessarily attacked by people, and am defending myself. Sorry, but I don't turn the other cheek when someone attacks me personally. Funny, noone seems to refute what I am saying by trying to defend the show itself, or that it's a forgotten classic, etc. My point still stands: you can try to keep this show going as long as you want by producing more comic books, silly anecdotes about what happened behind the scenes, etc. It still doesn't change the fact that this show is dead, not coming back, 99.999999999999999999% of the population do not consider it a beloved, canceled too soon classic. Move on to interesting shows that people still care about.
Opinions can still be wrong...which yours falls into.
Firefly will live on forever, cynical bastards be damned.
hey jill. you kind of sound like a bitch. just thought i'd let you know how you're being perceived. have a nice day!
You can't stop the signal :-)
You can never stop the signal
How come you people are smart enough to like Firefly but too stupid to not carry on extended conversations with Obvious Troll?
1. Yes, Jill, you are a forum troll. However, you have every right to be one if you want, since there's no law against it.
2. The rest of you: Don't answer the negative posts, all you're doing is encouraging the trolls to make more posts whilst giggling manically. Besides which, it drives trolls bonkers when they're ignored.
3. A funny thing to watch: If no one answers troll posts, then the trolls will make up different accounts, just so they can argue with/and be mean to themselves; all in an attempt to get sympathy reactions from others.
4. Firefly was a great series, easy to watch and unwind with.
Oh,in #2, that's "manically", not "manically".
Oh Hell! "maniacally"
I may sound like, but I'm guessing you are, if you throw around words like that and insult someone who hasn't said a word to you.
No, I simply posted a comment and was attacked by people who don't seem to appreciate different opinions.
And for the record, I was told by a friend (who is a fan of Firefly) that people were talking smack about me. This whole 'trolling' thing is retarded, and a way to try and silence people with different opinions (like when people say you are a 'hater'). It's a cheap tactic, actually.
This is pretty sad ! Firefly is the best show I have ever seen, but stop this crap.
You are not keeping it alive, you are trashing it with this less than mediocre short story garbage.
I dont care about Simon and Kaylee's kid that never existed in the series or movie.
The best idea I have for more firely is for someone to make an rpg game. Not an online game, but a decent single player with a really good story line.
I want Firefly ! Not
Firefly: The next generation (with Jayne being dead)
Sorry half-caste, plenty of folks disagree with you. And I for one think Firefly:TNG sounds plenty fun as long as some orig characters still there (Jayne or no Jayne - he was bound to die sooner than later anyway, and that short story method sounds hi-lariously appropriate for him)
How about we get a little more adult and just agree to BAN JILL!!
To any dissenters and or the troll:
Firefly was way ahead of its time, and in other ways a throwback to classic shows that some of us grew up on before people like you learned how to act childishly on a computer. It had winning characters, excellent writing and character development, and plot lines that engaged on more than just one level. So yes it was a forgotten classic.
Your needless flaming notwithstanding, I miss this show more than any other in the last decade. It actually had characters I gave a damn about, and all things considered was a swan song to what could be called quality storytelling. Point out one other show that can saw the same thing, that wasn't produced by Whedon or had 11 seasons to develop.
For one season, this show did the impossible. It made me want more from it.
I miss this show so much. Come back, Joss!!!!
Never. And if you don't like it, tant pis for you. I wish I could take you off the air Jill and replace you with Firefly. Sigh. If only.
Love Firefly. Jill, I could do without. Any chance we could take Jill the troll off the air and replace her with Firefly? Sigh. If only.
To actually comment on this posting: AWESOME! I didn't get the chance to get into Firefly while it was on air, but I'll own the boxed set soon, and apparently this book. Love Whedon and his work. :)
Also, I just love it when people decide to sling insults or attitude around just because they didn't like something that others enjoyed. We're not idiots for enjoying the show, and you're not brilliant because you can look down your nose.
And for those who react to such audacious behavior, just one small bit of advice: don't fuel comment wars. It's a waste of your time and only makes the instigator feel validated.
Why do you people have to troll around? lots of people like lots of things, and just because you don't like it doesn't make it trash or justify your belittling people for their likes. I mean come on, @Jill, we don't give you crap for secretly being a man and self-fellating while watching Rush Limbaugh, do we?
Half Caste
If you've got some friends and a few good ideas, there is a Serenity Table top RPG that is really quite fun. You just have to get about three or four folk together who've seen the show.
There is a lot of resources out there for it. Do a google search for Cortex RPG.
I have to say, I've been looking forward to Redemption for a while.
Sorry to hear about Jayne, but it fits his character.
Aunt River babysitting Kaylee & Simon's kids would be quite amusing.
I was going to say something poignant, and insightful to Jill and AfterGlow, but honestly It boiled down to one quote.
Can't stop the signal...can't ever stop the signal.
If that line of thinking turns you on, then you are sick man indeed. Pervert.
Again, this troll argument is lame. A silly way to shame people into keeping quiet. Oh well. Guess you have to feel superior somehow, since you really aren't defending this bomb of a show.
And this show was not ahead of it's time. Unless, by ahead of it's time, you mean ripping off...sorry, paying homage to previous shows like Outlaw Star.
The RPG game already exist, Half_Caste.
Margaret Weis Productions, Ltd gave it out some years ago.
You can find the game and source book on amazon if you are interested. :D
PS
The RPG is called "Serenity", not Firefly.
Outlaw Star...HAHAHA
So an anime geek is raving about a show being overrated, and busts out a reference to an obscure anime that no one heard of until Firefly hit the airwaves.
Firefly is really similar to an old Dice RPG called Traveler, which is much bigger universe than the Serenity RPG. Traveler is all about broken-down ships, moving/smuggling supplies and passengers, getting into trouble planetside, and trying to stay clear from the government.
The guns, the mule, and even the pod that River arrives in (called a lo berth) are in the game. Reavers are not there; you'd have to play them as a campaign. Which makes sense, since reavers were the plot-arch for Firefly.
Anyway, look into Traveler. I've played it several times, and it is a lot of fun.
I still wish/hope that Joss will make the second serenity movie, because i have the first one running through my head constanly and i have verry little of "my" second serenity playing in my head but i need the real thing.
It's about as obscure to the general public as Firefly is :D And whether it's obscure or not, that doesn't mean Joss didn't steal certain things from it (ie, River's introduction). Hey, you know about it, so how obscure can it be? :D
And I said SHOWS...clearly, as singingbarista points out, Joss clearly cribbed/borrowed/stole/payed homage to lots of other sources for this groundbreaking, ahead-of-it's-time show.
If you like Joss Whedon Shows check this out -
“Great Shows"
"We're surprised there was anyone left to run the other shows."
There wasn't, which is why Angel season 5 and Buffy seasons 6-7 were so uneven.
"during one break in shooting he started singing the theme from Oklahoma! Immediately, Nathan Fillion, Fillion's stand-in and a half-dozen others joined in"
just a ripoff of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRgnrsFwenI
Jill, go phuk your mother like your dad phuks you, hore!
(and yes, i know there are some words misspelled, i intended it that way. beeeaaatch!
I don't want to see "Browncoats: Redeption". I don't know or care about their characters - it's not FIREFLY. It's video fan-fiction. I can't excited about someone else's fan fiction. Watching something like that just makes you feel left out cuz you couldn't get involved. So... watch someone else doing what I wish I could do? No - sounds like watching your signifigant other have sex with someone else, and you can't do anything about it.
Hey don't be harsh ! Its not the video I have a problem with.
Its the arbitrarily killing off main characters for the sake of a stupid short story that I have a problem with.
good on the people who made Browncoats: Redeption
Um... folks? I'm not in the habit of defending snobs and trolls, but the nasty comments you throw back at her are not only encouraging, they're rude, and make you look like jerks. She's entitled to her opinion, just like you are.
I am a huge fan of the Firefly series and the universe that it has created, run the Serenity RPG, and generally get as much enjoyment as I can out of it. I look forward to the new offering, and have found the comics entertaining.
My point being, its unbecoming of all of you. The pretend cursing and nasty name-calling that you are all perpetuating, Jill included, is sad and immature.
This just in: Man Who Enjoys Thing Informed He Is Wrong. Film at 11.
To re-phrase a quote from Castle:
"There are no cows in space and ...[wasn't that] five years ago?"
"So?"
"So, don't you think you should move on?"
"I like it!"
And, let that define your tastes in the future. If we all liked the same things, the world would be creepy and boring.
its a crying shame sci - fi channel is only intrested in showing crap like ghost busting plumbers lmasoff and wrestling and its a shame when they canceled one of the great shows they had ...
I'm rewatching the series again and after each episode I yell "Damn you FOX!". Firefly was just so good...action, drama, comedy...it had it all.
Outlaw Star isn't obscure. It was just overshadowed by Cowboy Bebop, a superior show to both Firefly and Outlaw Star.
As much as I enjoyed Firefly, I don't understand why I still see articles like this people going on about its cancellation. You know, SEVEN years ago.
Blame Whedon for putting it on Fox where it didn't belong, and then going back to Fox with another show that didn't belong there.
Personally, I'm a huge firefly fan.
Not Buffy or Dollhouse, just Firefly specifically.
I loved the blend of cultures and the style of shooting, and I was sad to see it end so quickly.
I don't think it's a classic now, as it hasn't been around too long yet.
Maybe someday it will be, but for now it's definitely a cult/niche favorite.
It may not be on the air anymore, but it has a devoted fanbase that keeps growing.
Serenity RPG, comic books.
Firefly marathon nights.
It may not be as large-scale a nerd staple as Batman or Buffy, but that it's this well-knownn thanks to the efforts of its (ever-growing)fanbase really speaks for what a quality show it was/is.
I'm a huge Firefly fan. Only watched it for the first time 2 months ago and I retroactively curse Fox for cancelling it too soon.
This article was funny but I refuse to believe that Jayne died, since he was my favourite character and all. But I'm definitely getting that book once it comes out in
lil ol' NZ.
...I've never seen Firefly. And I didn't know Joss Whedon did it. Interesting.
I really liked Buffy-it was witty. The script is refreshing compared to what passes for TV nowadays.
It's funny to me how some people have told the "Whedonites" to let go of it, when I, among many others, would consider myself a "Browncoat" not a "Whedonite". Before I saw Firefly I had not seen nor read anything by Joss Whedon or his brothers. Sure I did afterwards, but that's like picking up a book by an author, enjoying it, and wondering what else they wrote.
I first watched "Firefly" about 2 and a half years ago, not seven. But if I had watched it when it first came out I would still love it as much today as I do now. I read my favorite book a decade ago for the first time. I don't love it any less because I read it ten years ago or because it is in fact much older than ten years. The same goes for "Firefly". I will always love the universe that was given to us in "Firefly" it is a wonderful combination of the westerns I grew up with and the sci-fi I've become a fan of. And the actors are amazing. And the stories are amusing.
If that makes me 'lame', well that does not make any sense. "Browncoats" are not the only people who love something years after it came out, who watch the sequals despite knowing deep down in their hearts that it's going to suck.
So stop posting just because you don't like something or because you think it is 'over'. Because in reality, to some of us it isn't over, it will never be over, when we are old and wrinkled we will be showing Firefly to our grandchildren, just like our parents are showing our children Star Wars. And they hated Episodes 1,2 and 3.
And for those who claim that Whedon stole from other ideas, well..yeah. He did. But here's a fun fact. So did Shakespeare. So did Homer! So did Stephanie Meyer for all that her vampires SPARKLE. There is no such thing as an original idea anymore. There's just new ways of putting these ideas together. And "Firefly" did that.
Is it just me or does anyone else think Jill would be a hot date?:) baby come to me!
I love that Nathan Fillion dressed as Mal for Halloween in his show "Castle".
I heard somewhere that at one point Jayne and Kaylee were supposed to hook up for a little while before Kaylee and Simon.
Personally I am happy it didn't happen.
i like the show. wish it was still on.
I never got to see Firefly while it was on the air. In fact i saw Serenity on a friends recommendation and fell in love and had to buy the boxed set and the movie. at one point i had it both in my collection and on my computer and would still stop whatever i was doing if a marathon came on.
who cares if it was borrowed or ripped off from anything? It was an awesome show. "The Message" is still one of the most impactful episodes of anything ive ever seen.
Bring firefly back? Nah, if it had had never been cancelled that would be great, but to try to carry on now would taint what is an irreplacible piece of history.
This is just one lowly whedonites oppinion. I know it definitely changed my 'verse.
Never saw it when it was on air. Watched it onine, its good stuff. Have not seen any of J's other stuff yet.
Dont feed the trolls..
I am so tired of jerks whose only desire is to tear others down. Never say anything positive. I have a suggestion: Shut it.
Firefly was a brilliant show that touched a lot of people, myself included. We like to go to conventions and run around in our Browncoats. What is wrong with that? Nothing, except bitter jerks can't stand anyone being happy or praising something. Be shiny, people.
Rush always makes me crack up.
I watched the beginning of the first two programs and turned them off. They control the language, I control the remote. In 24 years in the military I never heard as much concentrated vulgar language. I don't need to listen to it. I will pass on Firefly. And probably it's movie sequels.
If you look at the background of Battlestar Galactica. When the doctor tells the pres she has cancor you can see what look very much like Firefly.
Thank god for the ruling on the ban on gay and lesbian marriage in California. The federal gov't shouldn't have ever gotten in the way of state of California's issues in the first place.
Traveller has two "L"'s, if you're going to google for it.

("Stupid, stupid, stupid..." ;-)
You know, it's a little hard to see that there's an article on this site that condemns Firefly's cancellation and take it seriously when every episode's review here trashes the show and its fans, while plenty of terrible shows pull As.
Sorry but Jayne's not dead. He & River had lots of kids with really weird names.
I have to admit Jill's original comments were not particularly insulting. However, they did seem to mock the tastes of Firefly fans and that isn't simply a harmless opinion as she claims. While she doesn't deserve the majority of backlash she is getting, she could have chosen her words more wisely considering the forum.
After all, would you go into a room full of minorities wearing a white hood? Only if you expect to have your ass handed to you.
Very Interesting Post! Thank You For Thi Post!
I just watched Firefly for the first time a week ago. I never caught it when it was originally aired. I couldn't stop watching, and it took no time to get through the few episodes. I then watched Serenity. Although it was good and allowed some redemption for the crew, I hated what happened to Wash. It wasn't necessary. But it was a good show.
I love Fringe now, and I'm happy FOX has allowed it 3 seasons. hoping for more, but the chances look slim. :(
I came onto this site hoping for more tips on where I might find more of Firefly. My husband and I watched the complete season collection of firefly who was bought by our 28 year old son. I heard it was a TV sequel but due to lack of popularity it was cancelled. All I have to say is what a shame. We also saw the Firefly movie and loved it.
Firefly producers should produce more of these types of movies. A great mixture of mixed culture, adventure and fun.
Hey Theresa! Appreciate the positive position on Firefly.
Unfortunately Firefly got the axe after Season 1. Personally, I enjoyed the different plot dispersion of Star Trek meets
Bonanza meets Star Wars. There are some of us who still lust
for drama/action/sit-com/ programs. Wheddon needed to resell the "Firefly" vehicle,
unfortunately "Doll House wasn't
the greatest vehicle. Serenity
the full length movie is a follow-up to "Firefly" fills in some of the gaping holes the series left for it's fans to fall
amiss in. I too wish Wheddon had
expounded at least 2 more seasons.
why do the good shows die and the crap lives on forever?
I mean are they trying to prevent the bar from being raised?
Oh well it went to fox which is kind of like hanging around prostitutes from central africa.
This Comments section seems to be more about flaming than the show itself. So, to try to answer some charges, I'd like to toss in my two cents.
First off, there are people saying how great the show was. To baldly state that everyone attacks you but no one defends the show is a mis-statement. I think the show was one of the smartest shows on television. It had interesting and well-developed characters and didn't pander to the lowest common denominator. (BTW - I've never seen any other Whedon show. I'm not into vampires so I didn't have the slightest interest in watching Buffy or Angel.)
I am willing to give Browncoats: Redemption a chance because it looks interesting and - more importantly - well done. I've seen a number of fan "films" and a majority of them make me cringe (i.e. Jayne with a goatee drawn on with a makeup pencil!)
For the complaints about Jayne being dead, perhaps you missed the "old and cranky" description of Mal. In this particular story, I believe Malcolm Reynolds is 64 years old so Jayne still has some years left in him. Also, these are not fan fics, they are stories written by the show's writers so enjoy them for that if nothing else.
It was also my privilege to be in two of the episodes, Serenity and The Message, but that has nothing to do with my opinion of this show. I've been on lots of shows I don't care for but I do miss Firefly.
I think that's more than two cents so somebody owes me some change!
I just book marked your blog on Digg and StumbleUpon.I enjoy reading your commentaries.
it's not a lost OR a forgotten classic. I can see my box set from here, and i'm pretty sure that i can remember it.
And i'm not a whedonite, never bothered with Buffy or Angel, i'm a frakkin Browncoat.
Totally agree!
It's too bad I discovered Firefly after it was cancelled (but before Serenity). I would have loved sending Fox some much desreved hate mail ;)
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

still tryig to work out how anyone cant like the firefly series. i personally did not watch it when it was first released because 1) the shiop looked stupidly like a firefly.
2)we had a string of crp scifys on tv but hey 4 years later what a mistake i made
Firefly was a damn good show, but I don't see the industry bringing it back. "But a kingdom that has once been destroyed cannot come again into being - Sun Tzu" This applies to TV as well.
What are your reasons for it being "overrated"? It was well written, had a great cast who knew their characters well and had great chemistry amongst all of it.
This series needs a reboot, green room style. Its far cheaper than making a set. The only thing that can't be remade is the chemistry of the cast. and a relatively young and newish Summer Glau. I still rewatch the show every now and then, and I still love it. and why isn't Summer Glau on The Avengers. Shame on you Whedon.

Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any issues with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing several weeks of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?
Firefly was ok I watched a couple episodes and the movie but didnt like it. Cant really list big reasons why - didnt hate it though either. Im a big sci fiction fan in general though. I didnt like the universe setup (one huge star system just didnt make sense to me even though it might be plausible)
nice article Vinh, I am going to apply your rules, to my blog, soon…hopefully
