Despite my frustrations over egregious Sons of Anarchy snubs and superfluous Mariska Hargitay and Tony Shalhoub noms, today's Emmy nominations announcements are largely a happy occasion for me, personally, for one reason and one reason alone: Mike O'Malley, one of the most underrated actors on television, has been nominated for his tremendous work on Glee. In that weird guest actor category instead of the more prestigious supporting actor one, sure, but I'll still take it -- I just adore the guy. I always thought he was a far better actor than he ever got credit for and frequently gushed over his work in My Own Worst Enemy -- which got me mocked quite a bit at the time -- so now I'm feeling pretty vindicated. So, in the spirit of the day, let's review the credits that got him to Glee (and maybe an Emmy!), shall we?
Parenthood
This show has been renewed, so obviously it doesn't count as cancelled quite yet, but O'Malley played a lonely barista poet smitten with Lauren Graham in the show's maiden season, and, similar to his role on Glee, he alternated between hilarious and poignant on a dime, and made a lot out of a little role.
My Name is Earl
Oh, Officer Stuart. The most brilliantly inept cop in the land. He never did get to become a pro bowler like he dreamed, but at least he was one of the funniest things on a consistently underrated comedy.
My Own Worst Enemy
This extremely short-lived show had its problems, but it really was a decent guilty pleasure of a spy show while it lasted. While I am a Christian Slater apologist, a lot of the show's entertainment value was due to O'Malley's sleeper spy character who was half cold, calculating killing machine, half sweet, devoted husband and loyal friend.
Life with Roger
What? People don't want to watch WB shows about suicidal homeless men who move in with doctors, thereby creating light-hearted odd-couple joke set-ups? Weird. I can't believe this show got cancelled after just one season.
Yes, Dear
The less said about Yes, Dear the better, but Mike O'Malley did always seem to do his best to elevate the awful material he had to work with. We all have to pay bills by doing things we're not thrilled about now and again, so let's just give him a pass on this one.
The Mike O'Malley Show
This was an NBC sitcom that only aired for two episodes, and, admittedly, I've never seen them and they're not on YouTube, so I can't tell you how good or bad they are. What I can tell you is that the show starred Mike O'Malley and Will Arnett as best friends, and co-starred Kate Walsh, so how bad could it really have been? (It was probably really bad, I know.)
GUTS
Let's go to the leaderboard, Mo! Every child of the '90s desperately wanted to go on GUTS, a show in which children were pitted against each other in probably kind of dangerous extreme gladiator-style sports for prizes like Space Camp and lifetime supplies of Capri Sun. Mike O'Malley hosted and gave the children-jumping-off-of-bridges-while-trying-to-shoot-basketballs play-by-play, and it was awesome. Suck it, Double Dare.

Who is the most nominated person in Emmy history? You'll never guess.
