While there are many already-canned shows from the 2011-2012 TV season that we won't miss, Best Friends Forever is decidedly not one of them. The NBC series only seemed to improve from the fairly strong pilot and I think it wrongly got clumped together with the season's gender-obsessed failures like Are You There, Chelsea? and Man Up!, just because it featured two adult female friends and a slightly overwhelmed dude. In reality, BFF was a fun and promising series that deserved a bit more room to breathe. NBC will be burning the last few episodes off next month, so before the network officially puts a pin in it, here's what I'll miss about the show.
The Female Friendship
Lennon and Jessica, our titular best friends, were so much fun to watch together. The actresses' chemistry was fantastic -- the very fact that they could laugh, cry, scream and sing "It's Raining Men" together without missing a beat spoke volumes. It actually felt like you were watching two lifelong pals help each other out in a stressful time, especially considering the show never lazily forced any girl-on-girl sex jokes on them. (Looking at you, 2 Broke Girls.)
Well-Drawn Men
Sometimes the men on female-centric shows are written as macho jerks to counteract all of that zany estrogen -- thankfully, that was not the case with Joe and Rav. Sure, they were decidedly less emotional than Lennon and Jessica, but they were sensitive and had their own issues, too. And maybe that's why it was so satisfying to watch the women drive them crazy; it evened the playing field and led to some interesting (if not just plain funny) breakthroughs. The handsome firefighters didn't hurt, either.
The Elaborate Schemes
Though BFF was nothing like Three's Company, it did share in its classic sitcom wackiness. Watching the ladies throw impromptu culinary excursions and accidentally attend cougar-themed frat parties was a lot of fun, convention be damned.
Q
The nine-and-a-half-year-old was clearly the breakout star of the whole show. She was just plain adorable and her unabashed hatred for Jessica was always an episode highlight. Plus, she's one hell of a bargainer.
