Daily Picks For Sunday, December 30, 2007

It's the I Never Got Around To Seeing That Film Festival -- wind up the year with some worthwhile movie viewing, after the jump.

The French Connection: I still think the one in Ronin is better, but this car chase is pretty frickin' sweet.  (AMC, 8:15 AM)

The First Rule Of Fight Club: Is to stop making the "first rule of X is, don't talk about X" jokes.  For real.  (HBO Zone, 9:25 AM)

Marie Antoinette: I wear Converse with skirts all the time.  If you thought Lost In Translation was wildly overrated, you should give this a miss, but it's pretty to look at.  (Starz Cinema, 10:30 AM)

Elephant: Van Sant isn't for everyone, but this one will get you talking at the very least.  (IFC, 10:45 AM)

The Outsiders: You don't see Macchio much anymore, but everyone else in The Outsiders is still a household name.  Not based on the acting on display here, though.  Matt Dillon alone is a ham the size of a city block.  (A&E, noon)

The Last King Of Scotland: I don't know anyone who loooooved this movie, but I've heard good things, and Whitaker took home the Oscar.  (WMax, 1:05 PM)

Little Miss Sunshine: It's neither as bad as some people say, nor as good as others say -- I thought it was merely good, a nice two hours at the movies, but Steve Carell is heartbreaking in it.  Watch for his scene in the gas-station mart; he's shoulders above the material.  (HBO Signature, 1:45 PM)

Jarhead: If you're not suffering from war-movie fatigue, try this one -- not a perfect effort, but Gyllenhaal has his shirt off a lot, and Sarsgaard is always good.  Those two need to quit hogging the last-name As, though.  (OutMax, 2:40 PM)

Notes On A Scandal: A bit overpraised, and I'm not a huge Blanchett fan, but it's one of those movies you're sure didn't work at all until you realizing you've been arguing that point with your boyfriend for a solid 45 minutes already.  (@Max, 3:30 PM)

Akeelah And The Bee: My friend Q declared this the best movie of the year.  He does that with almost every movie he sees, but he was in the ballpark on this one. (SHO, 5 PM)

Tommy: Oh my God, with the beans?  It's not "good," exactly, but you have to see it even if you don't dig The Who, if only to spot all the big-name people in it.  (TCM, 6 PM)

Being John Malkovich: I didn't like this as much as some people did, but Malkovich's catalog order is worth the price of admission.  (IFC, 7 PM)

Dead Calm: I think Billy Zane is due for a comeback, and it seems like someone at BBC America agrees with me.  (8 PM)

American Beauty: Underwhelming, in my opinion, but it's one of those movies you "need to" have seen so you know the references.  Won too many awards, but its influence is waning.  (Five-Star Max, 9 PM)

Jesus Camp: Excellent documentary about Pentecostal/fundamentalist kids at Bible camp.  (A&E, 10 PM)

From The Hip: "What ever happened to Judd Nelson's career?"  Among other things, this, which is the quintessential dreadful Brat-Packer star turn we saw a lot of around '87.  Gather some friends, open some pinot, and if you're storing scenery in your house, hide it, for it will be eaten.  (Showtime Family, 10:15 PM)

United 93: Not what I would call an easy two hours, obviously, because you know what's going to happen.  But Greengrass makes it suspenseful, and he's doing it using a number of real people, people who were there, as his actors.  It's a pretty significant accomplishment, but...you know.  Go hug a loved one.  (WMax, midnight)

Ronin: Speak of the devil!  But seriously: the movie's good, the car chase is GREAT, especially the passengers' faces.  (Spike, 1 AM)
