Daily Picks For Saturday, January 12, 2008

by Joe R. January 12, 2008 11:09 AM
Movies, movies, movies, and other things for your Saturday pleasure.
Want To Be Made?: As if to illustrate Wing Chun's belief that MTV's Made exists solely to help high school kids achieve their dream of being gay, today's mini-marathon gives you the following episodes: ballerina, ballroom dancer, figure skater, and soap star. Shine on, you crazy diamonds. (MTV, 12 PM)

Brother & Sister: Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo prove exactly why they should already have won Oscars by now as semi-estranged siblings in the 2000 movie You Can Count On Me. (WE, 1 PM)

We're Guessing Susan Lucci Is Not Impressed: In all my years of following soaps, I don't think I've seen as much fanfare as I've seen for the return of Rebecca Buddig (or "Mrs. Bachelor Bob," if you're partial to that show) as Greenlee Smythe on All My Children. Today, SoapNet has a solid block of programming designed to essentially roll out the red carpet for her. Never has failing to make a dent in prime time turned out so well for anyone. (SoapNet, 2 PM)

"So...What Are We Doing For New Year's?": I will defend the greatness of Doug Liman's Go with my last breath. Check it out and see the last time Katie Holmes was held hostage by a shady character. (HBO Zone, 2:10 PM)

"You Look Different, Clarice": What with Star Wars and The Matrix, the last ten years has been too full of disappointing and ill-advised sequels, but let's not forget to add Hannibal to that list. What a load. Jodie Foster was right to turn this shit down without a second thought. (USA, 3 PM)

Everything In Its Place: Wait, so it's a western with John Wayne as the hero, Dean Martin as the drunk, Angie Dickinson as the girl, and Ricky Nelson as the kid? Don't pull any muscles by stretching, you guys. Seriously, though, it's Rio Bravo and it's a pretty good time. (AMC, 3 PM)

As A Matter Of Fact, It Is Just Like The White-Winged Dove: Throw a rock around the LOGO channel and you're likely to find a sensitive coming-out comedic drama, but Edge Of Seventeen is actually a really good one. Not to mention a decent '80s flashback. (LOGO, 4 PM)

Yes, More Football: The playoffs continue, with Seattle traveling to Green Bay to try and desecrate the holy vessel that is Brett Favre (FOX, 4:30 PM), and then Jacksonville trying to slay the quite unholy vessel that is the New England Patriots franchise. (CBS, 8 PM)

Speaking Of Unholy...: The History Channel is airing a two-hour special called The Antichrist. Check it out and make sure you don't recognize any of the current candidates for President. Don't want to get burned on that like the last time. (History, 5 PM)

"Let's Show This Prehistoric Bitch How We Do Things Downtown!": Ah, Ghostbusters. ...That's all, really. It just makes me feel very happy and contented. (VH1, 6:30 PM)

My Mini-Marathon: Four consecutive episodes of Scrubs, including last season's finale followed by the series premiere. (Comedy Central, 7 PM)

You Can Say What You Want, I'm Not Tuning Out: Saturday Night Live is a repeat, of course, but it's last year's Jake Gyllenhaal-hosted show where he dressed up like Dreamgirls and sang that song and scared the shit out of everybody. Good stuff. (NBC, 11:30 PM)
