A guest picker takes the reins for a bit, and a really funny idea for a game show floats onto NBC.
There are times when something particularly nice falls into your lap, and for me, it was a lovely email from GTC reader Camille with her entire slate of picks for today. If you want to make some picks of your own, head over to TWoP's spanking-new listings to pick them out, and then send them to me at missalli at televisionwithoutpity dot com. You, too, could save me a lot of work. Not that that's the reason you should do it. AT ALL.
I will return at the end for a few picks of my own, but first, I turn you over to Camille -- these are her picks, and these are her (very funny) comments:
Blazing Saddles is always good. Story: When playing Movie Title Pictionary, my partner got Blazing Saddles and as soon as she drew her picture I screamed, "FIRE HORSE!" and will probably never live it down.
(AMC 1:15PM)
The Jon and Kate Plus 8 people are on Oprah. I'm starting a rumour that they were all hired to pretend to be a family. Just so people can have something to talk about. (Check local listings)
Gilmore Girls episode in which the very annoying line, "Bye, Jerk. Die, Jerk." is yelled at Rory. If you look closely, even the extras are like, "Yikes, that was clunky." (ABC Family. 5 PM)
The "WE WERE ON A BREAK" episode of Friends is on TBS at 6. Because that didn't get played out or anything. (TBS, 6 PM)
They are reshowing a bunch of Millionaire Matchmaker episodes on Bravo. See how greasy the Matchmaker Lady's hair can get! Listen to her make up metaphors that don't make sense! (Bravo, 8 PM)
That Mitchell and Webb Look. A sketch comedy show on BBCA. Funny, British, and one of the guys is pretty cute. A diabolical combination, to be sure. Plus, you can say things like, "Some people just don't understand the subtleties of British humour," Whilst sipping brandy and smoking a pipe during the commercials. That's not allowed for other networks. (BBC America, 9:15 PM)
A few additions from me:
I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't highlight for you the Price Is Right Million-Dollar Spectacular. Will there be Mountain Climber? That's the only thing I ever, ever care about. (CBS, 8 PM)
Many of the cheap-ass game shows being put on the networks these days are utter trash (American Dadiators, anyone?), but I have already giggled out loud at the commercials for Amnesia, particularly where they ask the guy which of the brides is wearing his wife's wedding dress. Because although part of that is that dumb "dudes forget their anniversaries!" thing, when I add it to the one where the guy doesn't know the speed limit on the block where he lives, I suddenly realize that this is a really, really funny concept. Because come on -- this happens to you all the time. You can't name the street you turn on every day going to work, because it doesn't matter what its name is, etc. etc. I'm totally watching this. Particularly compared to other Friday fare currently available. (NBC, 9 PM)
If you've been jonesing for an actually funny romantic comedy (for instance, if you are A.O. Scott), and if you can tolerate Richard Dreyfuss (not everyone can), get some popcorn and sit down for The Goodbye Girl, which is funny, charming, romantic, and full of quotable lines: "Of all the right-up-front girls I know, you are the right-up-frontest." Oh, Neil Simon. For a Friday night -- particularly, as we're going to have here, a snowy Friday night -- this is perfect. (9:45, TCM)
