We've got the programming, the counterprogramming, and your options are expansive. Join us, after the jump.
You'll Find It's Twice As Sportin': If you really don't want to
spend the whole day prepping for football, spend it with exuberant
musicals! TCM is marathoning happy-dancing musicals (as opposed to
tragic, depressing musicals) for most of the day, beginning at 6 AM.
Check the full schedule, but I personally recommend Anchors Aweigh (6 AM; Gene Kelly dances with Jerry The Mouse); The Band Wagon (12:15 PM; Fred Astaire/Cyd Charisse); Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (2:15 PM; wonderful in every way); and An American In Paris
(6 PM; the ballet is wildly overrated -- watch it for "I Got Rhythm"
with the kids and for Oscar Levant). If you want to be totally creeped
out to the degree that you will not be able to believe the movie is
real, watch Gigi, which...just watch Gigi (4 PM; "Thank Heaven For Little Girls," whom we can turn into prostitutes by training them early).
Aaaaand Jump!: You'll get plenty of grunting and testosterone today; cleanse your palate with Fashion On Ice, in which skaters show off designers' creations. That'll learn you, sissy! (Style, 10 AM)
Slightly Distorted Melodic Solo!: It's fun to watch That Thing You Do! for a few reasons, but especially to really admire the brilliant work of Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne, who wrote the title song, which is exactly as it must be, in that it is infectious and perfect and you can kind of see how it would be a huge success and then start driving you mad. (E!, 12 PM)
Oh, GOD: Okay, the Super Bowl Sunday pregame show on Fox is four hours long. FOUR HOURS. I hope you brought your adult diapers. (Fox, 2 PM)
Woof Woof!: You either are a person who watches The Puppy Bowl, or you are not. I, personally, will be subjected to a recording of the infamous Glutton Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday (it's tradition), but I recommend you stick with the cute dogs if you're looking for an alternative. (Animal Planet, 3 PM)
The Subtlety Of Subtleties: BBC America hits us with the double shot (as it were) My Small Breasts And I followed by My Big Breasts And Me. I like the fact that they changed the pronoun, like...you and your small breasts are a subject, but you and your big breasts are an object. COINCIDENCE? (5 PM Small Breasts; 6 PM Big Breasts)
Shoulda Been The Packers: And here it is: Super Bowl XLII: Patriots vs. Giants. What can I add? (Fox, 6 PM)
Not Appealing: ABC counterprograms the Super Bowl with Meet The Fockers. Seriously. (ABC, 9 PM)
Flex And Point And Flex And Point: NBC keeps on chugging with The Biggest Loser, offering up a new episode, in case you're not already feeling guilty about everything you've had to eat today. (NBC, 9:05 PM)
It's Not Lupus!: Color me a little surprised that Fox is blowing the post-Super Bowl slot with a regular episode of House, a show that's several seasons old and doesn't seem likely to benefit a lot from the free eyeballs that come with this position. I don't really get it, but if you like House, you're in luck. (Fox, 10:15 or whenever)
