Let's manage expectations here, people. Just because this is a show about people who work in an ad agency, this is not, nor does it ever try to be, Mad Men. Any comparisons would be completely unfair, because this is not a highly-stylized carefully scripted period drama where every teeny piece of dialogue or utterance has lasting significance. Instead, it is a light-hearted, brightly-colored and fun look at the modern world of advertising with cute slackers getting promoted and mad cases of undiagnosed ADHD running rampant. Which isn't a bad thing, it is just different. Oh, and did I mention that Tom Cavanagh (Ed from Ed) and Eric McCormack (Will from Will & Grace) are the stars? So it is more comedy, less drama.
In the first episode, this dynamic duo of Mason (McCormack) and Conner (Cavanagh) have to come up with a new ad campaign for cell phones on short notice. "Spar-text-icus" is one of the suggestions, so it's pretty silly and Cavanagh is his typical goofball self. McCormack is a little more high-strung and you can tell he's the type of person who has his sock drawer all neatly organized. Anyway, the odd couple work together in this fast-paced environment, but things get awkward when Mason gets promoted and Conner suddenly has his best friend as a boss. And there's a host of supporting characters who are all quirky in their own weird ways, especially Sarah (Monica Potter).
It's not necessarily appointment viewing, but it is entertaining (especially if you are a fan of either of the leads) and worth checking out in general. It is definitely a better way to spend your time than watching The Bachelor.
