Thursday, January 28, 2009: Hell’s Kitchen

Thursday, January 28, 2009: Hell’s Kitchen

While watching Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares makes me wary of ever eating at a restaurant again (have you seen some of the dirty horrors he's uncovered?), I don't have the same issue with Hell's Kitchen. Nope. In fact, all it does is make me not want to eat at any of the restaurants these contestants work at... ever. After seeing Ramsay berate someone for picking pasta out of the trash, washing it off and then trying to serve it, I'm a little skeptical that these people can cook.

However, I do enjoy that while some of these people hop right in, having had classical training and having seen the inside of a professional kitchen before, some of them seem to only have worked at whipping dinners up in their own home. This is no Top Chef. It isn't like they have to make up creative recipes off the top of their heads with limited ingredients. Instead, they have to cook Gordon's dishes every week, and some of them still can't handle it. After about a week, I think even I could probably figure out how to cook Beef Wellington properly. There's this thing called a watch. These contestants would seriously benefit from learning how long to put things in the oven. Not so difficult, people.

It's no wonder that Gordon loses his shit on a weekly basis (it's really the only reason to watch this show). If I was dealing with such incompetence, I'd start calling people donkeys, too. So tune in if you want to see actors sit and starve in the restaurant and complain to put-upon maitre d' Jean-Phillipe, and to see if any one actually knows how to run a kitchen. Oh, and to see how long it takes Gordon to start screaming. My money is on six minutes in, or as soon as he tastes the first "signature dishes," whichever comes first.

Hell's Kitchen airs on Fox at 9:00 on Thursdays. Check our listings to find out what else is on tonight.
