The series marks its 100th episode tonight (as Mindy pointed out to me, that's what happens when you air 50 seasons a year). In all seriousness though, I never thought this show would last beyond two seasons. I thought people at home would get bored of watching really fat people lose weight through diet and exercise, given that our society is so focused on the easy fix. But I was wrong. Each season adds bigger and fatter people, which makes this show more fascinating, and throw in your requisite bitch and whiner and you've got yourself some good TV. Who cares if every other challenge is them holding stuff or climbing over something?
I'm going to focus on the positive for a second (for a change) and think how many pounds have been lost in 100 episodes (too many too count, especially if you are math-challenged like me) and how many lives have been saved or extended (at least three) and how much the prescription drug companies must hate Jillian and Bob for getting the contestants off of their multiple meds.
As for Jillian and Bob, they are really what makes this show. They are what compels me to tune in episode after episode. It surely isn't the lame product placements that are laid on way too thick. Even in a season that's more than a little on the boring side ... like this one we're in the middle of ... you can count on Jillian to make someone puke and Bob to surprise you... like his blow up at Joelle!
Tonight the current crop of slightly-slimmer fatties balance on something (real original) near the never-used pool in order to win a 24-hour visit with a loved one. And of course, after a lot of math and percentages and time on the big scales, someone goes home.
And is it wrong that I usually end up eating cookies while watching the last-chance workouts? Probably. I'm sure Jillian would not approve.
The Biggest Loser airs on NBC at 8 PM. For more of what's good to watch this week, check out our week in preview.
