There was soooo much buzz around the 90210 reboot that it took a few episodes before people realized how mediocre the show actually was. Teen sex, drugs, pregnancy, divorce, adoption and porn are just as relevant today as they were when the original show aired, but a combination of insipid plots and crap acting by the core cast has made this revamped 90210 something of a disappointment. The one thing it has to recommend itself is a handful of familiar faces -- stars we know and love from elsewhere (Tristan Wilds from The Wire, Jessica Walters from Arrested Development, Annalyne McCord from Nip/Tuck and of course Shannen Doherty reprising her role as Brenda Walsh), who also happen to be the show's most engaging actors.
If nothing else, the show's producers know that there's no better way to distract people from the show's shortcomings than to cast actors with good reputations in both cameos and recurring roles. Which is, perhaps, why they tapped Aimee Teegarden, who plays Coach Taylor's precocious daughter Julie in the critically loved football drama Friday Night Lights to appear in a multi-episode story-arc beginning tonight.
When last we saw the West Bev crew, prodigal English teacher Matthews had returned, as had rapey theater nerd Ty, Dixon and Silver had broken up, AAdriana had just gone all "Papa Don't Preach" on everyone, Annie threw a shit fit because she got a bit part in the school production of "Antony and Cleopatra," and Ethan got into a cliff-hanger-y fender bender on his way to bring Annie to the cast party. Tonight, we'll be introduced to Teegarden's character, Rhonda, a sweet, retiring West Bev student who is injured as a result of Ethan's bad driving. Ethan tries to be a stand-up guy (ie assuage his guilt at almost killing someone) by visiting her in the hospital and things get a mite too cozy for Annie's taste. Which, judging by her previous shenanigoats, will most assuredly result in a high-pitched tantrum of some kind.
Tune in to 90210 tonight at 8 PM on The CW to watch the fur fly. Check our listings for more of what's on tonight.
