Tuesday, March 31, 2009: Cupid

A long time ago (okay, 1998) Rob Thomas (creator of Veronica Mars) made a sweet little show about a guy who believed he was Cupid and had to match up 100 couples in order to return to Mt. Olympus. And despite the fact that it was Jeremy Piven (who I am personally not a big fan of), the show was still entirely charming. Piven was surprisingly believable, and even likable, as Cupid, and Paula Marshall (who is now Gary's shrewish ex-wife on Gary Unmarried) was a great disbelieving foil (in the form of a shrink) set to disprove Cupid's claim. The show didn't make it a season, but it has a bit of a cult following. So perhaps because of that, or perhaps because Thomas has a slightly bigger fanbase now, ABC decided to give this show a second chance. The results air tonight. While I haven't seen it, the fact that it is a midseason show -- and it had its order cut -- doesn't bode too well.

Monday, March 30, 2009: The Hills

Season 7,683,412.839 of The Hills is back, y'all! Okay, it's really only Season 5...but this show is soooooo tedious that it feels longer. However, as every magazine or website that is willing to give space to pictures of shiny fauxlebrities seems to be intent in hammering into our brains, this is Lauren Conrad's last season! Got that everyone, she's not going to be on the show anymore! Okay, then...but since MTV hasn't actually said anything about canceling the series, does this mean that it could go on without her? And without Audrina, who is leaving The Hills after making a deal with Mark Burnett? Gosh, who does that leave...Speidi! A show about Speidi! Except guess what: that show would be the end of civilization as we know it. Hopefully MTV has the wisdom to understand that and act accordingly.

Sunday, March 29, 2009: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

I'm really excited about this show. I haven't seen a screener or anything, but I really enjoy reading the books. There's something I find entirely charming about the character of Precious Ramotswe. She's smart. She's self-sufficient. She's funny. She's determined. She's sexy. And she's handy with firearms. All important things. And her unbridled enthusiasm for her job is enviable.

Week in Preview: March 29, 2009 - April 4, 2009

TV has been home to countless detective shows over the years -- some good, some bad, but none of them Botswanian. But now that niche has been filled: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (HBO, 8pm) premieres Sunday with a special 2-hour pilot. Bonus: this episode was the last filmed thing ever to be directed by the late, great Anthony Minghella.

Good news, Star Trek fans! ...no, I'm not talking about the movie! Family Guy (FOX, 9pm) takes a trip to the Enterprise-D when Stewie beams the cast of The Next Generation into his bedroom for a day of Trek-tastic fun. Guest voices abound!

Friday, March 27, 2009: Party Down

I already shared my thoughts on this show the other day, and not much has really changed, except that Mindy told me a silly story about Ryan Hansen at SXSW and now for his sake I hope that the show does well. Because, well, he seems like a nice guy and employment is good in this day and age and lord only knows what is going to happen with that Gossip Girl spinoff.

Thursday, March 26, 2009: Samantha Who?

It's back. And returning in the worst timeslot ever. It is going to be on at 8:30 PM on ABC tonight... right about when a certain little show called American Idol will be revealing its results. Excellent. I'm so sure that people will make sure to watch this instead. Which is sad, because I actually like this show and would like more people to watch it, but I think it is getting a raw deal. Even without Idol, Thursdays are already crowded with Survivor, Bones and NBC's comedies. And this show isn't kicking off the night, it is following new series In the Motherhood, which might be cute, but the commercials make me want to throw something at the TV... so that's not so awesome. But, maybe I underestimate audience's love of Megan Mullally, or maybe people will tune in thinking Ugly Betty is on and be too lazy to change the channel. I dunno. I'm pretty skeptical. And the fact that ABC has only scheduled six out of the eleven filmed episodes... doesn't bode well for this quirky comedy.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009: Survivor

Because of that basketball thing, Survivor is on Wednesday instead of in its normal Thursday-night perch. This means nothing really, except that you'll have to make sure there aren't any conflicts in your DVR with the already-confused schedule that has been jostled around because the President of the U.S. wanted some time to chat to the American people. But if you just can't make it work, this is the dreaded "never-before-seen" highlight episode, which basically recaps the season. And hey, we've got Sarah M to do that for you. Though, if you haven't been watching or, like me, still have a hard time remembering who is on this show and what their names are, this might be helpful. I'm not joking. I've watched this show religiously for years, but if you put a picture of Brendan or Erinn in front of me and asked me their names, I wouldn't be able to do it. Not for peanut butter and chocolate or anything. Probably not even for a free car.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009: The Bad Girls Club

This show is signing off for the season (though next week promises a lively reunion with Perez Hilton and everything), and while no one on it this season was nearly as fabulous as last season's Tanisha, at least the queen of mean did make an appearance to share her knowledge with the wannabes. I can't even justify why I watch this show. I mean, Rock of Love I defend because it is just freakin' hysterical (and there's the surprisingly sweet Bret). Real World/Road Rules Challenge or Real World proper I can explain because I've been watching them forever so therefore I can't stop myself. There's no real defending Bad Girls Club. I guess some people like to watch the bitchy rich women on Real Housewives, I just prefer the trashy lowbrow gals on this show instead. To-may-to/To-mah-to.

Monday, March 23, 2009: Gossip Girl

Monday, March 23, 2009: Gossip Girl So Blair didn't get into Yale, and instead of just chilling out and being happy she won't have to go to such a stressful school like any normal lazy person would do, she's basically going to flip out completely and "explore her dark side" tonight (whatever that means). So much so, in fact, that Serena and Chuck become very concerned about her and try to bribe Dorota for intel when Blair goes AWOL, which should be hysterical. The other characters on the show have things to do as well, though no one cares about the people who aren't named Blair or Chuck. Regardless of that, Vanessa tells Nate to grow up and forgive his family their shittiness, Rufus and Lily share their sexual histories with each other with disastrous results, and the press release I read didn't say anything about Dan and Tinker Bell, but I'm sure they'll be hanging around as well. Should be fun! XOXO and all of that.

Sunday, March 22, 2009: HBO Season Finales

Sunday, March 22, 2009: HBO Season Finales It's season finale night on HBO! I'll miss two of these three shows something terrible, but I have to say, my DVR will not. It gets really stressed out about Sunday nights when the Fall TV season is in full swing. But I digress -- here's what's on tonight.
