I'm really excited about this show. I haven't seen a screener or anything, but I really enjoy reading the books. There's something I find entirely charming about the character of Precious Ramotswe. She's smart. She's self-sufficient. She's funny. She's determined. She's sexy. And she's handy with firearms. All important things. And her unbridled enthusiasm for her job is enviable.
Jill Scott (who is mostly known for her massive singing prowess) is bringing the character to life, and from the commercials I've seen, she seems to be perfectly cast. Anika Noni Rose (who also has an amazing set of pipes) plays her oddball assistant. Together, they figure out how to run this detective agency, helping women (who might normally feel uncomfortable hiring a male private investigator) find missing children, or snoop on their cheating husbands. It's serious subject matter, but vetted through the ever optimistic world vision of Precious.
It isn't often I judge a show based solely on the trailers and the source materials (though I did with True Blood and that turned out alright), but I'm pretty sure I'm going to love this show. It seems like the creators really brought these books to life in a way that is true to them, with actors and actresses who really fit their characters. And the fact that it is on HBO gives me hope that I'll get to see a full season. Because while these mystery novels are wildly popular, I'm not sure that this show could work on a bigger network where its quirky humor and dark subject matter would probably have been turned into a muddled mess and cancelled quickly. Here it's got a chance to really shine. And I hope that it does.

Sorry, but this show does not sound like a hit.
I hope you give it a try, readgirl66. The books are pretty good, very low-key, but, they draw you in. The main character is a very different style detective, but, she still closes her cases. Oh,I guess I can't give it a try, I don't have HBO!
Saw the first episode and it was GREAT! Very different. Funny, touching and I could not tear myself away from the screen. I am looking forward to the next episodes and have already programmed my DVR. I think it will be a hit.
Since all the toxic waste products of western civilization and culture get dumped in Africa, it's good to see a show that offers something beyond the misery that seems to be Africa's most abundant resource.
To me, Precious Ramotswe represents a symbol of hope and humanity in this bleak and sad continent.
