A long time ago (okay, 1998) Rob Thomas (creator of Veronica Mars) made a sweet little show about a guy who believed he was Cupid and had to match up 100 couples in order to return to Mt. Olympus. And despite the fact that it was Jeremy Piven (who I am personally not a big fan of), the show was still entirely charming. Piven was surprisingly believable, and even likable, as Cupid, and Paula Marshall (who is now Gary's shrewish ex-wife on Gary Unmarried) was a great disbelieving foil (in the form of a shrink) set to disprove Cupid's claim. The show didn't make it a season, but it has a bit of a cult following. So perhaps because of that, or perhaps because Thomas has a slightly bigger fanbase now, ABC decided to give this show a second chance. The results air tonight. While I haven't seen it, the fact that it is a midseason show -- and it had its order cut -- doesn't bode too well.
That doesn't mean I still won't take a chance and watch it. I will. I love Bobby Cannavale, who has stepped into the Piven role. And Sarah Paulson... well, sometimes I love her (Deadwood) and sometimes I really want to throw things at my TV to make her stop talking (Studio 60). I'm hoping that her performance here falls into the the former category and not the latter. I trust that the dialogue and episodes will be great, since Thomas is on hand, and I've got nothing but faith in him, but the entire crux of this show really falls to the chemistry between the two leads, and it is hard to tell from the commercials if that is really working or not. So we'll see how that goes. Even if I don't love it, it has got to be better than that atrocious Valentine series (also attempting to be about Gods on earth trying to help humans get coupled off) that aired ever so briefly on the CW this fall. Anything would be better than that. Anything.
Cupid premieres tonight at 10 PM on ABC. For alternatives, check out our week in preview.

Sigh. I remember the first series. Loved so so much. I was so disapointed that it got canceled. I doubt I will watch this one though. Sorry Rob Thomas!
I'll watch it because I love Rob Thomas very much and Sarah Paulson was great in her tiny part in Serenity. However, does it make me terrible that I kind of secretly hope it gets canceled so that Rob has more time for trying to get the Veronica Mars movie off the ground? My love for VM would take Cupid's death as a reasonable sacrifice.
I'd like to give the old Cupid a shot as well, but it doesn't seem to be on DVD. That way, if this version bites, I have something to fall back on.
And I'm ready for a VM movie, as well. Get on it, Rob!
I love Bobby Cannavale and Rob Thomas, and I mostly like Sarah Paulson, but I just can't bring myself to watch the new series. I just don't think there's any way it's going to do well, and I don't want to get invested if it's not going to stick around.
Alex-- the whole series is on youtube. That's how I caught up. It really is a cute, sweet show. We'll have to see how the new one goes...
