It's the season three finale of FNL (for us non-DirecTV havers) and it is shaping up to be a doozy. Mostly I'm just excited that the show is renewed for not one, but two more seasons, which means that this isn't the series finale, only the season's end, and that we'll for sure get more episodes. Woo hoo! I don't even care that some people are leaving, that's the nature of a high school show. If everyone went to Dillon Community College and shared a dorm, that would be ridiculous. It's better to have people go away, move out of this small town. Besides, I like how they got rid of Smash and Jason Street this season. It was touching and a fine farewell. As long as there are no more preposterous murders, it is all good.
This season has been a rollercoaster for everyone, so many on-again, off-again relationships and so much character growth. Just look at Riggins, going from self-involved drunk, to good friend who is sometimes even responsible (if still drinking a lot). Or Tyra who took off with a bull-riding cowboy, and then learned not to take advantage of Landry's undying devotion to her. Or Tami learning that even as principal she's always going to have to deal with those nagging boosters. There's a lot of emotional upheaval... which is what makes this show so engrossing. Not to mention the fabulous acting.
Tonight's episode, which takes five months after last week's state championship, features Matt going off to college and dealing with the heap of guilt that comes with leaving Julie and his grandma behind. And Lyla having to go to an estranged uncle for help to go to college. Even Coach is worried about his job. Second place is not the same as winning State. And of course the much talked about (at least by her) wedding of Mindy Collette and Billy Riggins.
Anyway, if you haven't been watching, go rent the DVDs, you won't be sorry. Just skip those season 2 episodes with Landry/Tyra's murder caper, and I guarantee you'll get sucked in. For me, it is going to be a long off-season until we get more next January (presumably)... makes me want to save up to get DirecTV... or take a road trip to Texas.
The finale airs on NBC at 9 PM. Or check our Week in Preview for some other options.
