Wednesday, April 8, 2009: Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Duel 2

$300,000 is a sum of money that very few earn in a lifetime, at least not all in one lump. So what better than to offer it as a prize to a bunch of reality non-stars who were once on MTV? That's right, The Real World/Road Rules Challenge is back, this time with "The Duel 2" as its dramatic after-colon descriptor. Also, it's going to be in New Zealand, which means that they'll finally have something other than Lord of the Rings and Flight of the Conchords to brag about, I guess. I'd try to list some of the more prominent cast members, but to be honest they've all been on so many different versions of these shows that I can't keep anything straight anymore. It looks like there are six people from RW Hollywood and Sydney, so that's something. And apparently some of these competitors haven't been on TV since The Gauntlet 2 in 2006 -- tell me, does anyone really still care?

Anyway, there are also some tough new rules, fitting for a show that purports to be about duels. It seems the competitors will be fending for themselves in each challenge, with one male and one female winner every time. These winners then get to pick someone to save, and that person gets to pick someone of the opposite sex to save, and so on and so on down the line until there are only two people left, one of each gender. Yes, this sounds exactly like everyone's bad-dream (or unfortunately-non-dream...) scenario of not getting picked for teams, except with a kicker: the losers have to fight! Bet you never had to do that in gym class. So they choose an opponent of the same gender, because we don't want men slugging delicate ladies I guess, then battle it out and send the losers packing. As they surely deserve.

This whole thing seems incredibly complicated, but that isn't really the problem here -- the problem is that anyone still cares to watch these people. And seriously, $300,000? You win a third of that on every Bravo competition, and those shows are at least a million times more entertaining by my calculation. Plus, we're in a recession! Shouldn't this money be going to pay off the country's massive debt or something? Aaarrghhh...

But hey, I'd still rather watch this than The Hills. So you know what, forget everything I said and go forth to enjoy the duel... 2!
