If you love Chris Rock's stand-up comedy and have been meaning to get around to watching his semi-autobiographical show Everybody Hates Chris... well, you have two more chances. Apparently, you should have tuned in earlier, because tonight's episode is the second-to-last episode of the series, ever. With no fifth-season renewal, Rock is going to send his teenage self out on a more or less factual note by having him take the GED test and drop out of high school in his sophomore year to become a stand-up comic, just like the real Rock. But first -- terrorism!
That's right, the teen Rock calls in a bomb threat on his high school in order to get out of taking a test -- except, since this is 1987, the NYPD doesn't take his threats very seriously. Usually, I'd say anything goes in comedy; if it's meant to entertain, do whatever you think you need to do. Chris Rock jokes about a lot of taboo subjects. But a bomb threat? Really? Bombs haven't been very funny for a while now, and I remember thinking, when someone called in a bomb threat at the very end of the movie Road Trip, that it was kind of a dark ending to what had until then been a wacky sex comedy. Sure, Everybody Hates Chris is set in a more innocent time, and the theme of the show seems to be "Chris makes bad decisions and comes to regret them," but this just seems a little... messed-up, even if he does get ignored by the police. I sure hope it's not based on anything Chris Rock really did, because it would make me a lot less defensive of Pootie Tang in the future.
Everybody Hates Chris airs tonight at 8/7C, and next Friday at 8/7C, and then is no more. For more viewing options, check out our Week in Preview.
