Sunday, May 3, 2009: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Boy oh boy, there's a lot of craaaaazy TV going on this Sunday! But some of you might enjoy something a trifle more serious than an episode of Family Guy starring Lauren Conrad or the season finale of Tough Love on VH1. Thus, we present to you possibly the saddest episode ever of one of the saddest shows on television: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. With bonus Colin Powell!

This week, the man on the receiving end of Ty Pennington's goodwill has seemingly been through more tragedy than Job himself. Jeff Cooper is a former army medic who managed to come back from Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm with both Gulf War Syndrome and Multiple Sclerosis. Now confined to a wheelchair, he campaigns for veterans' affairs and apparently saved his son's life after being run over by a garbage truck. Seriously, this man is a saint! How does EM: Home Edition find these people? And does anyone else get the feeling we should be doing something more for this guy than rebuilding his double-wide -- maybe give him a lifetime of free meals at Olive Garden? Or a medal? I know which I'd rather get (soup, salad, and breadsticks FTW!).

Apparently ABC feels the same way about giving Mr. Cooper a little somethin' something', as they are sending the entire family to Washington DC to meet, of all people, Colin Powell. Personally I think they should hold out for Obama, but what do I know? Anyway, Powell will be giving the Coopers what is described in the press release as "a gift." I'm guessing a gift certificate to Pier 1 or Pottery Barn... what's a refurbished double-wide without some nice throw rugs?

Anyway, this is going to be super sad but ultimately uplifting, but this show is usually super sad but ultimately uplifting, so maybe that's fine with you. As for me, I have an aversion to men who overuse hair gel so I won't be watching. Sorry, Ty.
