Sunday, June 21, 2009: Merlin

Is America ready for two Merlins? Just when we've gotten used to "Merlin," the small, flamboyant Honduran designer on The Fashion Show, the original wizard shows up to reclaim his good name. Only this time, he's not some old guy with a beard -- he's a young boy, just starting out in the magic biz, who comes to Camelot and meets a young King Arthur. Because, of course, if you want to introduce a character to a new generation, you need to make him between 13 and 21 years old. That's just how it's done. He couldn't have been an older gentleman who's still pretty cool, no -- the kids would never go for that. They need a young, cute wizard, and it has nothing at all to do with the fact that there's a new Harry Potter movie coming out this summer. Nothing.

I don't object to the idea of a young Merlin specifically, but I am worried. Here's why I'm a little nervous about Merlin: the creators of the show, who also did a British series called Hex, have said that they looked to Smallville as an inspiration. SMALLVILLE! Are they out of their minds? That show is terrible, and has been for a while, and no amount of dragons will make it good. I can see the parallels, of course -- it's like when young Lex Luthor came to town and met young Clark Kent, and they became friends, but would later become enemies, except here, Merlin and Arthur start out as enemies and become friends. (It's actually a lot like the new Star Trek movie in that respect.) But if it wasn't for the presence of Anthony Head as Arthur's dad Uther, I don't know if I'd have any desire to watch this thing at all. Legend of Earthsea left a bad taste in my mouth.

Merlin premieres Sunday night at 8/7C on NBC. Check back Monday for our recap of the premiere, and see why we wonder if a new medieval series is a good idea.

I tried to watch this last night. It was extremely bad, to put it kindly. Instead of taking place in post-Roman Britain where it belongs it is set in some strange alternate universe Medieval Britain. The characters are all a bunch of annoying whiny idiots. I pretty much hated it.

Aww, I really like this show! I can't believe I'm saying that, given the hceesiest special effects award it undoubtedly deserves. The fairy tale setting is only fair since the whole legend is mythical, not historical. And, I want to see who Marlin has to face down magically-yet-not-magically next week. At least let this last until Morgana is kicked out of town....
