This stupid show is back, now with a new host. Regis Philbin and Jerry Springer both have had the good sense to cut ties with this summer reality series, so in comes Nick Cannon, aka Mr. Mariah Carey, to fill their shoes. Anything that keeps him from making more movies like Love Don't Cost a Thing, which mangled cute comedy, and Can't Buy Me Love, can't be all bad, right? I might just have to give this a shot.
I say that every year though, and I try, I really do. And I watch a gluttonous amount of reality shows, but there's just something about this one that doesn't grab me. I think it's that the whole idea of what constitutes talent is so varied on this show. You've got your singers, your jugglers, your ventriloquists, your burlesque dancers. How do you judge things like that against each other? Last year's Nuttin' But Stringz was a group of super talented violinists who mixed their classical training with hip hop, and they lost out to a pianist and opera singer. All who were talented, but personally, I liked watching the guys who mixed it up and offered something new, whereas America liked the opera guy. Nothing against Neal E. Boyd, but he's not my cup of tea.
While I did tune into the finale last year, I mostly just watched the occasional clip online, but the series for me just really drags, with seemingly never ending layers and layers of auditions. I haven't counted, but I'm pretty sure their auditions go on longer than Idol's... or maybe I care less about time during the winter when it's cold and I have no desire to ever move off of my couch.
And I've got a hunch that this season is going to basically tune into the Search for the Next Susan Boyle and every single unconventional looking singer/performer up there will be compared with her at some point, either by the show, or the media. I can see the headlines, "Is So-And-So the next Susan Boyle?," being blasted at me every time I open a newspaper. Worse still, Ms. Boyle will even be gracing the AGT stage this summer. Let the poor woman go sit with her cat, OK? She's tired.
Finally, I still just don't see how they will ever be able to top last year's auditioner Busty Heart. She had talent. Yes, she did. If she had made it through to the Top 10, I certainly would have been compelled to watch.
