Wednesday, June 17, 2009: The Unusuals

If you haven't been watching The Unusuals, shame on you. What turned you off to this quirky, hysterical cop dramedy? Was it the idea of pouty, adorable Amber Tamblyn playing a cop? Or did the prospect of even more panicky Harold Perrineau make you woozy? I can see both of those arguments. But Perrineau -- and Tamblyn, and Adam Goldberg, and Jeremy Renner, and Kai Lennox are all hysterical, and the series is the perfect antidote to the overly melodramatic Law & Order: SVU, and even my darling Criminal Intent. The show isn't about the cases, it's about the cops, who also happen to solve bizarre cases in spite of all their hilarious fears and flaws. Hell, even the show's dispatcher-style Twitter feeds are funny! Not that any of this matters, since tonight is the last episode ever. Because you didn't watch it. Jerks.

In tonight's episode, "Beaumont and Cole go undercover to find a criminal who breaks into apartments and shoots adult films." That sounds pretty awesome to me, although Monique Gabriela Curnen and Josh Close are the least funny members of the squad. Here's hoping Monique going undercover on an adult film shoot gives her better material, and sexier outfits. There are a bunch of plot threads in the air right now, and I don't believe we'll see any resolution on any of them, but I'm assuming we'll see some more movement on Perrineau's family curse and Goldberg's brain tumor, and possibly the exposure of Joshua Close's criminal past. (Again, not that any of it matters.) I would have liked to see if Perrineau reached 43 without dying, and whether Goldberg would have continued to experience bizarre smells and tastes before eventually having to see a real doctor, and not just a cute girl in Forensics, but oh well. And I would have watched any number of episodes centering on Kai Lennox's dedicated-but-inept Eddie Alvarez. Before the show aired, I kept seeing it get compared to M*A*S*H, and now I get it. Eddie Alvarez is Frank Burns, if he spoke in the third person and had a glorious mustache, and I hope Lennox brings his mustache with him to his next project.

The Unusuals finale airs tonight at 10/9C on ABC. If you like it, watch a couple more episodes at the ABC site. After that, you gotta wait for the DVD.
