Saturday, July 11, 2009: Harper’s Island

Woo-hoo! Final episode! For those of you who have made it this far, congratulations -- you just watched 26 people get murdered in a little less than three months. What other TV show can give you that? Okay, besides your standard police procedurals. And maybe Heroes when it's on a roll. And half of the series on HBO or Showtime. But among non-crime, non-shitty-superhero shows on network television, Harper's stands out. It's like a horror movie, but one where you actually have time to get to know the characters before they get axed. Usually, just when you think you're about to get to know the scantily-clad cheerleader, she gets her head cut off, and you don't really know her well enough to care. But on Harper's Island, you get to know that scantily clad cheerleader's hopes and dreams.. and then they decapitate her! Or defenestrate her. Or harpoon her to a tree.

I'm speaking metaphorically, of course. There are no cheerleaders on Harper's Island, just members of a wedding party who are slowly getting murdered by killer John Wakefield. The pace has picked up quite a bit, though, and now it appears that he's had some help from someone we know, so you may want to spend today getting caught up on all of the episodes before the season (and series) finale airs. It's a shame it didn't get renewed, because it's a pretty great concept, but I don't know if I would want to watch another season where whoever survives the events of tonight has to contend with yet another serial killer. Nor would I want to spend a ton more time on that damn island. So maybe it's for the best. Anyway, a toast to the bride and groom, though gruesomely murdered one of them may be.

The series finale of Harper's Island airs tonight at 9 on CBS. Too late for you to get on the boat? Check out our Week in Preview.
