Tuesday, August 25, 2009: Warehouse 13

Sigh. We all knew this was coming. It's an episode that appears at least once in the life of every sci-fi show (not Syfy show, although that's probably not too far from the truth, either). It's the "evil version of the main character" episode: you've seen it on Smallville, Eureka and every incarnation of Star Trek. Not only does it keep the actors happy by giving them a different personality to play, it keeps the fans happy by showing the female characters acting like sexpots and the male characters being even bigger bad-asses.

This week, it looks like Agent Bering (Joanne Kelly) drinks the Kool-Aid and becomes a sexier, more bad-ass version of herself. Ironic, since last week Lattimer and Bering made a Star Trek joke about being "red shirts." (Fortunately, Kelly will not be sporting a goatee a la mirror-universe Spock.) Technically, there's no Kool-Aid involved, just another mysterious artifact that belongs in a museum -- er, in Warehouse 13. This time, it's Lewis Carroll's mirror, which apparently either inspired or was infected by his story Through the Looking Glass, because when Myka gets trapped inside, the evil entity inside it comes out, takes her form, puts on a sexy dress and seduces Agent Lattimer before shooting him with a Tesla gun. Further meta-izing this episode is guest appearances by Eureka stars Niall Matter ("Zane") and Erica Cerra ("Jo"), who had her own evil twin episode a few weeks ago, when somebody stole her DNA signature. (Joe "Henry Deacon" Morton guest-stars next week.) Thankfully, Warehouse 13 doesn't always try to come up with totally crazy-ass science like Eureka does, instead giving equal credence to crazy-ass magic. Last episode's invisibility-inducing samurai sword was pretty awesome, especially when wielded by an evil Roger Rees -- here's hoping he turns up for more fantastical dickery in future episodes.

Warehouse 13 airs tonight at 9/8C on Syfy.
