God, Hoarders is gross. And depressing. And voyeuristic. And uncomfortable to watch. But, like Intervention and Obsessed before it, I continue to watch and enjoy for shameful reasons I'd rather not admit. Tonight, we meet Augustine, a Louisiana woman whose compulsive hoarding was so extreme that she lost custody of her son years ago and never regained it. Now an adult, the boy and his adoptive mother confront her as her house is forcibly cleaned by the city for not being up to code. It's... going to be very difficult to watch, but I think we all know we're going to do it anyway, with rapt attention. We should all be ashamed of ourselves, but such is the magic of Hoarders. Hoarders airs on A&E tonight at 10 PM, but if you can somehow smell those houses through the TV, our Week in Preview has tidier viewing options to choose from.

Why should we be ashamed to watch it? Hoarding is a mental illness, possibly related to OCD. If it was a movie about schizophrenia, or depression, would we be ashamed to watch it? And for hoarders, it's gotta be nice to know they're not the only ones.
I think we might want to be ashamed to watch because it is freaking taking place on TV, as exploitive entertainment, not as therapy for the person involved. Do we really think that having her mental illness splattered across a national network is going to help her? These shows are the TV equivalent of people slowing down to look at the crash on the freeway. They might entertain the onlookers, but they don't get much help for the individuals involved.
As a hoarder, I watched some episodes this past summer. The hoarders on TV are offered professional help during the clean up session and do appear to get better. It has inspired me to find a local therapist, now that I know exactly what it is and that there IS help to be found.
I enjoy watching the show, however, I sincerely hope it does not go the way of sensationalism, targeting older, ill, and cognative impaired people. It could happen to anyone, and just scanning the debris can sometimes be just for the shock value.
However the real problems are the "closet hoarders" who are often upstanding, well-educated, and well=heeled, who hide their dirty little secrets even from close family members and friends, by limiting it to certain areas of their property. These areas can be just as dirty, dangerous, and absolute horrors for anyone trying to clean up, after the hoader either vacates or dies.
Makes me think twice about that clandestine silverware drawer that I compulsively dump my spoons and forks in, while meticulously cleaning the rest of the house! Kidding aside, please don't target those that honestly cannot help it, and in some cases, don't even seem to understand what is going on around them, with all the cameras, etc. A very good series, all in all.
