I recently learned from Entertainment Weekly that the star of Better Off Ted, Jay Harrington, used to be in the American adaptation of Coupling, a show I never watched. EW made him apologize for that show to plug his new one, but we won't be that cruel, and will simply say that the show is really funny, and you should be watching it. If you haven't seen the first season, A. it's not a big deal and B. it's only 13 episodes long, and it's out on DVD if you want to watch it. But you really don't. Just watch Season 2 starting tonight. Why? Well, because the show is a ridiculously over-the-top workplace comedy, much in the vein of 30 Rock. Allow me to explain.
Harrington research division supervisor Ted is like a more confident Liz Lemon, and Portia de Rossi's uberboss Veronica is like a blonde, pretty Jack Donaghy. The nerdy scientists who work at Veridian Dynamics are always coming up with crazy inventions and neuroses, not unlike Tracy Jordan, and there's even an insecure blonde named Linda who's always looking for love and/or workplace respect a la Jenna Maroney. And they know how to rock a guest star, too -- tonight's episode guest-stars Taye Diggs as a love interest for Linda, who gets paired with her through the company's genetic compatibility test. (Like Sheinhardt Wigs on 30 Rock, Veridian often imposes ill-advised policies on its staffers.)
Better Off Ted Season 2 premieres tonight at 9:30/8:30C on ABC. For more options, check out our Week in Preview.

Portia de Rossi, but you're right- she is a lot like Jack Donaghy!
I agree the show is in the same caliber as "30 Rock" but I disagree with the parallels drawn. It is simply its own unique program and I am devastated that it's been cancelled. Are there not enough quick-witted people in the US to keep up with the fast-paced and genius writing? I sit back and marvel at the cleverness. It never disappoints. "30 Rock" has gone downhill - given enough seasons, maybe "Ted" would have as well. But too, too bad it's gone.
