Friday, January 15, 2009: The Singing Bee

I have got to hand it to the programming coordinators at CMT: one chilly October night after shamefully watching Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, I was blindsided by The Singing Bee. Like its name suggests, this show follows the same basic ideas of all of its other crappy karaoke-based game shows, blending "a mix of 60 percent country music with 40 percent popular favorites from other genres," as it actually says on the CMT website.

However, there's something unique, maybe even extraordinary, about this particular version of the game (originally on NBC hosted by Joey Fatone). Maybe that something is "celebrity" host Melissa Peterman? You may (don't) know her from her Reba fame, Surviving Suburbia fame, or her one episode of Just Shoot Me! fame. It's not that she's not funny (though, she isn't), it's just that there is clearly no "LAUGH" button the lights up for the studio audience, making all of her jokes fall dead to a painful silence, eventually leading her full-on self-deprecation by the time we reach the Bee's " Final Countdown."

Alternately, that little spark that The Singing Bee has could be from the fact that they will play the same quasi-famous country songs over and over again in the beginning of the show in order to eliminate the first two contestants. If the first contestant gets the lyric correct, they advance to the next round, and a new song is introduced, which the next contestant in line must attempt. The magic lies in that if the contestant doesn't get the exact words of the song correct, they have to step back, and the next person in line tries the same song. I have honestly seen an episode where every single contestant but the last gets the song incorrect, subjecting myself to Mark Chestnutt's 1996 classic "It Sure is Monday," not one, but six times.

The entire show is a train wreck and I cannot stress how seriously I suggest you tune in. The third season premiere airs on CMT, Friday, January 15 at 9/8c.
