It's probably a good thing that most diehard Battlestar Galactica fans have already watched the Caprica pilot on Hulu or on DVD, since the first hour of it is going to be on against the Haiti benefit that everyone in the world is going to watch. Though of course if you haven't watched it, it's airing again right afterward at 11, so you can always do both. And if you haven't, while it isn't a perfect pilot, it is definitely worth checking out. Even if you don't know what the hell a Cylon is or how to find Caprica on a map.
This is a prequel to BSG, however, watching that show isn't a prerequisite for tuning in to this one. Instead of an edgy, hard-hitting, very sci-fi space drama, Caprica is more of a thoughtful, family saga that just happens to take place on a world that looks a lot like ours, but is way more futuristic.
The gist is that Eric Stoltz is a power-hungry genius, who has a precocious daughter who likes to sneak out at night, help stage rebellions and make life-like duplicates of herself for fun. After a tragic accident, Stoltz decides to exploit the artificial intelligence technology that his daughter developed for his own gain. Esai Morales, is a hard-working blue-collar type used to being looked down on, who meets up with Stoltz, but doesn't buy into his whole crazy mad AI plan. The two are sort of the Hatfield and McCoys of the series, so look forward to lots of showdowns between them. Oh, and robots. Yeah, in this world there are robots. But they are robots with feelings, so it isn't the most sci-fi thing ever.
Check it out at 9 PM on sci-fi or again at 11 if you are busy watching celebrities try and change the world.
