Monday, January 25, 2010: Damages

Monday, January 25, 2010: Damages Because I was one of the many who didn't think Damages' second season was anywhere near the quality of its first, I am very happy to say that the first two episodes of the new season are fantastic. Like its first season, it manages to make a ripped-from-the-headlines plot work in its own storyworld (like Season 1's Enron inspiration, this time around Patty's going after a Bernie Madoff-type, and it ain't thinly veiled, or veiled at all, really), which also allows for Ellen to be dealing with Patty in a way that makes sense. Ellen's got a job with the D.A. now, and is working the criminal side of the case, while Patty is, of course, seeking damages for Schmadoff's victims (one of whom is that poor bastard Tom Shayes, because the world just hates that guy for some reason). Bitchy tension is had by all, and it's just delicious.

Schmadoff's wife is also played by Lily Tomlin, doing great work in a dramatic turn a la Ted Danson, and Martin Short as the Schmadoff family attorney, who has toned it down and seems to be doing fine, though the first two episodes I've seen so far don't really give him a whole lot to do other than robot around spouting legalese. But I'm sure that will change. Oh, and did I mention there's a huge and grisly twist in the premiere? And that this season is going to be amazing? Really, if you gave up in the middle of or after Season 2, you were right to do so, but I really recommend giving tonight's premiere a shot. They're bringing their A game this time.

Damages premieres on FX tonight at 10 PM, but if dog-murdering lawyers frighten you (in a bad way) our Week in Preview has nicer options. But I bet they're not as fun.
