Thursday, February 18, 2010: LA Ink

Obviously, since I've been obsessed with Sundance Channel's Be Good Johnny Weir, I'm going to spend most of my evening watching the Men's Figure Skating Finals to see if adorable little Johnny can pull out a medal, but I'm almost equally as excited for the season premiere of LA Ink. Yes, it's a show about tattoos and the drama seems forced and staged, but I just can't help myself. It's like an edgier, older version of The Hills.

Think about it: Kat Von D is sort of the Lauren of the series. The show used to be all about her and her attempts to make it big and prove that she could create a very female-centric shop with a lot of girl power. Corey is sort of her Lo. He's a nice enough guy who's always there to listen to her problems and is very down to earth and chill and a family man, but he doesn't get many solo story arcs of his own, and when he does, they're a little dull. "Hey, I'd like to paint a picture"... and he does. But lately, this show has been overtaken by the drama surrounding Aubry (the Heidi Montag, if you will). She's your typical famewhore who was on Rock of Love 2, knows absolutely nothing about what she's doing and somehow (thanks to a casting department, no doubt) got Kat to hire her and keep her around despite ongoing screwups that make everyone hate her. She also brought in another plague in the form of Pauly. He's a New Yorker who wasn't good enough to really work at LA Ink, so he just hangs around and causes trouble and generally makes a nuisance of himself... a la Spencer. He and another former employee, Amy, now work at a completely separate shop with boss who comes across as a starving over-actor that they found hanging around the Mad Men set desperately seeking a job

So the focus of the series has shifted and now Kat kind of just wants to work and make her beauty products and mostly be left alone. She really doesn't do much at all that's exciting except try and keep her employees from killing each other. That brings me to tonight's premiere, since the season finale culminated in a showdown between the mild-mannered Corey and the grating Auby, who we last saw in a fight to end all fights that seemed likely to end with someone either quitting or getting fired. And yes, while this was pre-taped and I'm sure someone out there knows the answer, I am somehow compelled to watch the drama all slowly unfold over what will likely be four episodes before it gets resolved, only to then start up again.

Anyway, if you feel like you're too old for The Hills and you want to watch people getting carefully crafted tramp stamps, give this show a shot. It's on tonight at 10 PM on TLC and conveniently re-airing again at midnight in case you don't have a DVR and/or don't want to miss the Olympics.
