Who Do You Think You Are? is a British series that has aired on the BBC since 2004. I'm not sure I find the idea of watching celebrities trace their ancestries interesting, but the show rakes in over 6 million viewers an episode over there, and Lisa Kudrow was big enough of a fan to create an American adaptation, so it must be doing something right.
I was actually on a conference call with Kudrow and co-executive producer Dan Bucatinsky a few weeks ago about their WDYTYA adaptation. They sounded super excited about it and swore that the show is not a tear-fest. It's worth mentioning that Kudrow believes anyone's genealogy would be interesting to explore, not just that of high-profile celebs, but I don't think she'll be sending any of us regular folk our own crews of experts to uncover our bloodlines any time soon... though, I've got to admit, I'm impressed with the line-up for this starter season: Sarah Jessica Parker, Susan Sarandon, Spike Lee, Matthew Broderick, Brooke Shields, Emmitt Smith, and Kudrow herself.
Quick question: Is this show's title memorable to people who were never avid Spice Girl fans? Without fail, every time I see or hear it, this goes off in my head.
Girl Power aside, the first episode of Who Do You Think You Are? is tonight at 8 PM, and at the very least, we'll watch SJP go a whole hour without talking about shoes... probably.

Welcome to the Generation Gap.
Seriously, you think about the Spice Girls when you hear this title?
Have you ever even heard about Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Big_Stuff
Of course, you're talking to a guy whose "codename" involves a show that's over 40 years old?
Personally, when I hear "Who Do You Think You Are," I assume it will be followed by either "barging in on me and my guitar" or "leaving me alone with my guitar," but I think that's more a gap between me and the rest of the world than anything generational.
I think you're giving the blogger too much credit. I don't think it's generational. I think it's just shallowness and an inability to learn about anything or anyone that doesn't show up on TMZ or Entertainment Tonight. Remember what site you're on. "Petty and Shallow" could be the tagline here.
