Beginning tonight, esteemed cultural anthropologists Jessica Simpson, Kan Paves and that curly-haired girl from Newlyweds will travel the world comparing and contrasting varying global concepts of what makes ladies pretty. Which would be a fantastic premise if countless actually educated people hadn't already done that. But let's attempt to look at this as a reality fan and not some highfalutin' college kid. Always makes things easier.
I wasn't able to pre-screen the premiere, but the promo videos on VH1 are entertaining in the same sad, Jessica-Simpson-doesn't-know-anything kind of way. They're also just regular sad. The same scene that shows Jessica being floored that in some cultures the naturally tan people attempt to look white for socioeconomic reasons also shows us a poor woman whose skin was badly and permanently burned by skin bleach she bought from a Thai street vendor. Oh, and her husband left her because she wasn't a trophy anymore and her society has shamed her into total seclusion. So see what I mean? You get your slightly amusing "Chicken of the Sea" moment followed by something a lot less funny. Consider yourself warned.
The Price of Beauty airs on VH1 tonight at 10 PM. I'd recommend watching something else though. Week in Preview has ideas.

Isn't that the point of the show? To show those who follow the shallow reality process, that there are people in other cultures that make poor or dangerous choices in an effort to to fit perceived societal norms?
