BLOGS
In the few months since NBC announced that it was cancelling Southland because it was too gritty and whatnot and TNT's subsequent pick-up, I've come to terms with this decision. In fact, I'm even weirdly grateful that it went down that way, mostly because this show can keep its hard-hitting look and feel on cable in a way that network television just doesn't allow for. But also because I think that this worthy show has generated more press this way than it ever would have had it aired on NBC in the fall as previously planned. (As a midseason replacement in the spring of 2009, it was barely a blip on most people's radars, or DVRs, as it was.)
The big news for fans new and old, of course, is that starting tonight, TNT will begin airing never-before-seen episodes. I'm pretty excited to find out exactly what was too violent and dark for NBC standards. Maybe I've just watched too much of The Shield and The Wire, but to me, a good cop series should be powerful and a bit messed up. And Southland certainly was last year, which is why I liked it so much when it started, especially since the cast turned in such high-caliber performances, particularly Michael Cudlitz and The O.C.'s all-grown-up Ben McKenzie.
Anyway, if you haven't watched, do it now. I don't want to hear your "I didn't watch the first season" excuses. It's a cop show in Los Angeles. There are guns and partners and violence and shooting. You'll pick up the rest as you go along. And tonight, there's a lot of shooting, one of a 13-year-old boy and one on the freeway. Catch all the action at 10 PM on TNT.

"I don't want to hear your "I didn't watch the first season" excuses."
There's a marathon of the entire first season on right now.
So has TNT picked this show up for permanent? That is, will it continue to produce new episodes for future seasons, or is it just running out the ones that have already shot and ending it? And if it's the latter, does it have a proper finale, or does it just stop?
I just started watching it since it moved to TNT and I really like it. And you ain't kiddin' about Ben McKenzie being all grown up.
I can't wait until tonight!!! I'm glad it moved to TNT (and I got cable). It just seems fitting. I just can't wait to see what happens.
