Apparently, family movie night is back. Or, at least, that's what we're hearing out of NBC, anyway. Tonight's TV-movie, Secrets of the Mountain, certainly looks like a family movie. It appears to be one part Indiana Jones, two parts Goonies and 97 parts National Treasure 2, and it follows a single mom and her three kids as they go on a forced family vacation to visit property her uncle left her, and which now has a mysterious purchase offer. Of course, the property ends up including an entrance to an underground labyrinth, with a lot of yawning chasms and a Mayan pyramid and trap doors and slides like the ones that led the Goonies to One-Eyed Willie's pirate sh-- wait a minute. Mayan pyramid? Where does this take place? The town, Tesla Falls, appears to be in the Pacific Northwest, and I-- wait, Tesla Falls? Sigh.
Goonies comparisons aside, this looks pretty dang cheesy, with goofy effects and lame "I'm a teenager, you wouldn't understand, OMG blah blah blah texting" dialogue. Any notable stars would have redeemed it, but Barry Bostwick and Paige Turco are the only familiar faces in the whole thing, and Turco isn't even that familiar. Bostwick is, of course, a TV regular and a commercial pitchman thanks to his velvety voice (and let us never forget The Rocky Horror Picture Show), but Paige Turco was in The Agency and Party of Five and a few episodes of Damages>. I barely recognized her, but while refreshing my memory I was pleased to see that she also played April O'Neill in two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies! You win this round, NBC Family Movie Night. Well played.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.
Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

While I can appreciate the points in Friday, April 16, 2010: Secrets of the Mountain - Going Through Channels Blog - TV Shows & Daily Picks | TWoP, I am tired and sick of hearing about the "economic recovery". The US government borrowed and spent $6.1 trillion in the last four years to obtain a cumulative $700 billion rise in the nation's Gross domestic product. That means we've borrowed and spent $8.70 for every $1 of nominal "economic growth" in Gross domestic product. In constant dollars, Gross domestic product is flat, we have no "growth" at all for the $6.1T. In constant dollars, the gross domestic product in 2011 might get back to the 2007 level, if the US economy continues "growing" at the same rate reached inside the first 12 weeks of 2011. If not, then the Gross Domestic Product will actually be lower than before recession levels. There is no recovery, the numbers prove it.
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
