Friday, May 14, 2010: Smallville

It's the season finale of Smallville! Sadly, it's not the series finale, because while we're not sure this is the best note for the show to go out on, we have no guarantee that next season's finale will be any better. And unless there's a major game-changer tonight, which we doubt, next season will be more of the same old, same old, with Clark and Lois pretending to be in love for continuity's sake, even though they have no chemistry and no reason to be dating other than proximity and attractiveness, and Chloe on the sidelines, possibly dating a snarky Green Arrow. So unless they put one of these people out of their misery, we can already see where this is all going.

And who knows, maybe one of them will die, although it likely won't be Lois or Clark. Plus, it looks like a lot of guest heroes (Black Canary, Stargirl, etc.) turn up to fight the now super-powered and evil Kryptonians this episode, so any of them are fair game, especially against an army of trained Supermen. If we're lucky, maybe Clark won't come back right away next season -- with the Book of Rao now in hand, Clark has the power to send all of the Kryptonians, most of whom are now superpowered and evil, to another dimension, but since it sends all Kryptonians there, he'd go with them. I'm hoping for some kind of "Reign of the Supermen"-type story where heroes from past episodes -- Impulse, Cyborg, Aquaman, the Wonder Twins, anyone who isn't horribly killed in this episode -- come to Metropolis and pretend to be the Blur while he's missing. Then, when Clark finally comes back, he has really long hair. Hopefully, we'll be happy to see him by that point, and not wishing the Wonder Twins had their own show.

The Smallville season finale airs tonight at 8/9C on the CW. Catch up on episode recaps here, discuss this episode in our forums, and then see what other superbeings could sub for Clark in our guide to the Heroes and Villains of Smallville!
