Monday, May 3, 2010: The Real Housewives of New Jersey

The Jersey ladies have returned! I was given an advanced screener of tonight's second season premiere, so I can tell you right now that this first episode takes you right back into the Wizarding, Danielle-Hating World of Teresa, Jacqueline, Caroline, and Dina. And boy, do they hate Danielle! All they do is talk about how awful she is. Even though I generally agree with them, their non-stop shit-talking has actually gotten to the point that it's getting boring, annoying, and actually a little grotesque to watch. Seriously, sit through ten minutes of "Jersey Questionnaires" and you'll want to spend $20,000 in cash on new clothes just to change the subject!

Anyway, all things considered, tonight's episode is relatively low on Danielle-bashing, and instead has a pretty good mix of fun family segments, backstabbing, and budding drama. There are also a lot of babies! And maybe even some anti-Semitism... More on that:

There's a scene in this episode with Teresa's daughter Gia, where she makes a mocking comment about Jewish people. As you can probably tell from my name, I'm a Jew, and I found Gia's comment more of a dumb thing that an ignorant child said and less of a sign that Teresa and her family are anti-Semitic. I'm not saying that Gia making fun of a Jewish custom belongs on a list of "Top Darndest Things Ever Said By Kids," but I think it has been (or will be) blown out of proportion. I mean, don't kids think that everything is weird? Also, there are so many Jews and Italians in Jersey, and at the time of said comment, Gia was doing a super-Italian thing with her family so maybe she was feeling connected to her culture and wanted to keep the Italian tradition alive? I probably shouldn't be over-analyzing a child, especially one who models fairy costumes and whose mother is a reality TV star who flipped over a table on camera, so I'll stop here and just say to look out for it. I'd be interested to hear what you all think of the comment.

If you've never seen The Real Housewives of New Jersey before and are interested in jumping into the series, tonight's second season premiere is a fine starting point. Catch it at 10 PM, and check out our RHNJ Most Ridiculous Moments gallery.

Does anyone else out there know that the new bergen county house wife Kim Depaolo, is a house-wrecking whore not a house wife. AS a matter of fact, I dont think she will ever become a wife, not in bergen county anyway because she has done all of the men, hold on to your husband ladies, especially if he has a big fat wallet!

This remark is absolutely anti-semitic --- Where did Gia learn to say something like that? The entire family then agreeing that in fact Jews had horns (nice hand gensture to drive home the point, Gia), only confirms that the Giudice family is a bigoted, ignorant, one. Letting children say remarks like that without be reprimanded is how adults become racists. Gia is being bred to be intolerant of others unlike herself - and I am ashamed that the author of this post is ignoring the obvious implications of this show's portrayal of racism as being cute.

You can find me at Life: Forward (http://LifeForward.onsugar.com) talking about women, the wage gender gap, and body image.

i totally agree with Shayna...that kid should have been spanked...and given a time out, followed with some deep conversation..opps..well the latter will never happen..you get the point...that family is complete trash..and what is amusing to me is that she doesnt even realize how badly she appears on tv...

Shayna, I couldn't agree with you more. I was totally disgusted by the anti semetic remarks-including the one about jewish men being subservient to women...just disappointed all together. shame on bravo for including this in the show.
