Top Chef Masters is the quieter, kinder version of original flavor Top Chef, but I still find it fascinating. Watching seasoned and highly celebrated young chefs get in the kitchen to compete against each other or work together is riveting entertainment. It's not cutthroat reality TV, but it's still engrossing, and the way people act as though the only kind of reality programming that's possibly enjoyable is the "I'm not here to make friends" kind just eludes me. I got four DVRs, people. There's room for all kinds of things!
So we're down to crybaby Susur (he's brilliant, his restaurant is great, but the chip on his shoulder is unattractive), Rick Moonen, who's grown on me, and Marcus Samuelsson, who I liked a lot more when I was just reading about him every day and not actually seeing his personality in action. With Waxman gone there's no crowd favorite Rick Bayless to congenially take the win this season, but, hey, at least there's no Chiarello-esque "villain" to put up with this year.
It could go any of the three ways, but I'm predicting Samuelsson for the win. He's new, he's exciting, he doesn't overdo it and he's at that stage in his career where critics still unapologetically adore him. But who's your pick?
The Top Chef Masters finale airs on Bravo tonight at 10 PM, opposite kind of nothing, unless you count Happy Town.

Anyone but Susur. He is a big ol' crybaby, indeed.
I like all 3, so this is not an outcome that will devastate me (as some reality wins do...TAR). But I have ended up liking Rick far better than I ever thought I would. I kinda hope he takes it and Susur talks smack about him.
Judging by the editing, I would go with Rick for the win. He suddenly seems both likeable and sort-of like the underdog (to the extent that there can be one in this esteemed group). I like all three of them, too.
Ugh. Samuelsson bothers me to no end! He is always talking about his experience in Ethiopia and his poor family and blah, blah, blah. Look, we get it, you have a sad story and it influences you. Now move on and be a little more humble. I'm rooting for Rick--he seems a little kooky but fun and generally puts together a good dish. Sad to see Waxman go though. What a sweetheart!
Well, it has been decided but it seemed to be based on Marcus' life story, rather than on his food. They were all wonderful last night and I thought Rick would win but still like think Susur has an equally compelling story and his food was superior.
