Apparently, VH1 did not invent the idea of having comedians talk about things we care about in order to turn it into entertainment. I Love the '80s was a BBC series across the pond before VH1 turned it into a franchise, with repeated seasons of 1980s love-ins, a few 1970s editions, one series about the new millennium, one about toys, and one about the holidays. All relied on nostalgia, with possibly the exception of the millennium edition, depending on quickly your nostalgia sets in. But now their latest show tackles current pop culture events, in list format. Can it survive without the nostalgia?
Of course it can, especially because tonight's premiere episode profiles Lady Gaga's ten craziest fashion moments. Of course, if finding out which ten Ga-ga-getups VH1 has deemed the craziest is of no interest to you, let alone what comedians you've never heard of have to say about them, then perhaps this show isn't your cup of tea. You can always just read that section in Us Weekly where they do the same thing, but in print. But check back next week, when the show is about celebrity meltdowns, which could be interesting if it has audio and/or video, and isn't just the comedians doing their best Mel Gibson and Christian Bale impersonations.
The Short List premieres tonight at 9/8C on VH1.
