We're still on the fence about this show. While we love Stephen King, and we've been known to be both up and down on any show that has a "freak of the week" pattern, the catch-all nature of Haven leaves us meh. We get it, the town has a lot of crazy stuff going on in it, which is why an FBI agent is on loan there, looking into stuff with her local cop partner, but what does it all mean? What's the point? Is there a point? Is Eric Balfour as good as this cast is going to get, acting-wise? Because sometimes it seems that way. And when both main characters speak in a monotone and the show's biggest threats are called "The Troubles," it doesn't make for a very exciting show. But at least tonight's episode has ghosts stabbing people.
Apparently, a living shadow is walking around killing people by impaling them with his shadowy knife, and we'll admit we kinda want to see what that's about. But we also kinda dread having to spend an hour with the show's dull cast. Granted, Mulder and Scully could be a little dull sometimes, but at least they got to interact with different people in every episode -- The X-Files went all over the country, while Haven takes place in one weird town in Maine. Eureka, which comes on before it, similarly follows weird happenings in a small town, but it also has incredibly colorful main characters. And, occasionally, giant robots. Something to think about, Haven.
Haven airs tonight at 10pm, following Eureka's giant robots on Syfy.

I personally am a geek for monster of the week style & what I like about Haven is that there is usually a little bit of the myth arch in any given episode. While it certainly isn't the best on SyFy, it's still better than a lot of network fare & actually one of the shows (along with Eureka) that I look forward to every week. I personally enjoy both the leads but of course mmv.
Gee. What is your problem with Eric Balfour? There are far worse actors out there far more deserving of your scorn. I know he has the reputation of being a showkiller, but since I watched some of those shows I know that they were pretty bad and would have been canceled even if another actor had played his part in Hawaii, Conviction etc.
So did he spit on your lunchtray in highschool or steal your girlfriend or what?
Seriously ...all this dumping on certain actors is starting to get old.
Uh...they are actually complimenting Eric Balfour. They are saying he is the best actor on the show. Reading comprehension fail.
Umm, they weren't praising Eric Balfour. They were implying that it's pathetic that Balfour is the the best actor on the show.
Sarcasm detection fail.
I tried it. I thought it might be a supernatural take on Eureka, which seemed interesting. I gave it three episodes and then gave up. I'm not a big sci-fi type fan, which is probably the biggest issue. I like Eureka as much as I do because the town itself is so interesting and the characters are engaging. I didn't get that with Haven, unfortunately. It was just... boring. I don't mind Balfour, but his character seemed largely pointless and grating, which was too bad. I didn't think the acting was horrible but it wasn't strong, either. It just seemed like every episode moved too slow, and I couldn't get invested in the leads. Oh well. To each his own.
ABMJem - it's too bad you gave up. Episode four was really the tipping point for me, and it's gotten better every week.
I'm surprised TWoP doesn't like this show. It seems like the perfect mix of A list plots that are solved every week, plus bits and pieces of overarching narrative.
watching it right now for the first time and only decided to after reading this... and im gonna have to agree... the acting on this show is pretty horrible. almost at jessica alba status.

so it got better Kelly. Maybe I'll give it another go. I made it to the butterfly episode and decided it there wasn't anything particularly awesome or interesting for me and the leads are so wooden as to be unwatchable. Yeah, thinking on it, I think I'll wait until the season is over to watch it. There's only so many hours in the day... yes and that's why I'm commenting on a twop blog. lol
I thought so, Sallie. I was on the fence for the first couple of episodes, but felt the story really picked up around episode four. (They had some reordering issues with the first few shows.)
But, I have to admit, I like the lack of the over-the-top acting. Each lead has specific reasons for being quiet/reserved, especially with the other leads, and I'm not a big fan of the Perky Perfect FBI agent and other tropes of the genre.
