Tuesday, August 10, 2010: The IT Crowd

We know, we know -- there are a lot of people telling you that British TV shows are very good. "Oh, the original Office is so much better than the new one! Oh, I like the British Life on Mars a lot more! Oh, I'm so glad they didn't remake Spaced!" Well, this time, we really mean it -- The IT Crowd is really, really funny, and you should really watch it before the show's stars become big Hollywood movie stars, so you can say you knew them when. Let's meet them, shall we?

Chris O'Dowd plays Roy, the awkward, and yet comparatively suave Irish computer technician at a big corporation, and you may have seen him as the blind swordsman in Dinner for Schmucks. (He'll also be in Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels.) Matt Berry plays incompetent CEO Douglas Reynholm, and he was in Moon with Sam Rockwell as well as a few episodes of The Sarah Silverman Program. Richard Ayoade plays the dimwitted scientific genius Moss, and he's... well, he's mostly been in other good U.K. shows, like The Mighty Boosh and Garth Marenghi's Dark Place (both with Berry). Ditto Katherine Parkinson, who plays the computer-unsavvy IT supervisor Jen and appeared in Pirate Radio and How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (both with O'Dowd).

Okay, so not all of them have really broken into mainstream Hollywood, but they will, mark our words. Besides, watching these four navigate awkward workplace situations (mostly of Reynholm's making) and even more awkward social situations (mostly of their own making) is still damn funny, and has very little to do with computer repair.

The IT Crowd premieres tonight at 10:30 on IFC. And while we have you, check out other British TV shows you should be watching!
