People are rightfully trepidatious about the new Dexter season. The showrunner jumped ship, there's no Big Bad this year, Dexter's a single dad, Julia Stiles is happening -- there's a lot of cause for concern. Unfortunately I've only watched the premiere so far, so I can't really put any worries to rest, but I can tell you that this episode was... fine? I did not hate it? Oh, brother.
Without being overly spoilery, the season begins right after Rita's murder. The cops come, Dexter does his unfortunate "It was me" accidental confession that you've seen in the trailers, and Quinn gets suspicious. Dexter also has to tell Cody and Astor about their mother, and delivers the news with all the subtlety of a robotic sociopath with no emotions, which just goes over great.
Overall, I think it was an OK start. I don't think Quinn is any match for Dexter, and the whole thing reads like Doakes Lite, but Michael C. Hall is performing the hell out of these scripts, as usual, and the way the episode ends is interesting. Hope it stays on that path -- it would really hurt to add Dexter to my dreaded list of viewing chores (with the likes of Project Runway, Life Unexpected, House and The Office) after loving it so much for so long.
But I guess I made it through Jimmy Smits and Lila, so I can probably survive just about anything where Dexter is concerned.

They can throw anything they want at us, but nothing will ever be worse than Lila.
Nothing. Ever.
Wow. I guess I'm easier on Dexter. Or maybe Dexter is usually so great people have incredibly high standards for it? I do hope they do something new with the Quinn situation. He really is just Doakes lite and he's not as terrifying as Doakes.
Ahh I miss Doakes. I hope Quinn doesn't just become Doakes lite. There's no way he could ever measure up to Doakes and to try would be a shame.
I've been screaming on other forums about Quinn being a bad edition of Doakes-lite and without a Big Bad they're kidding themselves that he can run the show. Well, that started to happen, though not as crassly as I would have thought--and then, the whole mess in the kitchen happened. There are always some moments in scripted television and on film that you wish you could unsee. The kitchen scene is one of them. They seem to be trying to use old threads from last season and Quinn's attraction to Deb to build Doakes lite, even though neither the actor nor the character have convinced us they can handle it--although the slower play on the investigation gives me some hope for the actor. Could it be that instead of a Big Bad serial, we'll have a cult, a PI and witnesses to fill the void this season?
I agree. This episode was a fine start, but I kept waiting to be blown away by something, and I wasn't. I'm still looking forward to the rest of the season, though. And yeah, the Quinn thing is totally starting off the same as Doakes, except Doakes was super scary and so far Quinn is just like a fly you want to swat away.
I do want to add that Deb, Mrs. MCH, did an amazing job last night. That "who the fuck are you?" when she came home to find the neighbor was awesome--completely summed up all her frustration and anxiety from the day.
