Did you write this show off as a Twilight clone at the beginning of last season? Well, I nearly did, but I'm really glad that I stuck with it. It's a satisfying show with big payoffs and twists and turns, and it's just good fun. And not just because Ian Somerhalder makes Damon so deliciously wonderful, but because the show doesn't take itself too seriously and aims simply to entertain.
Last season's finale left us with reveals about other supernatural folks in town, Jeremy maybe opting to become a vampire after his undead girlfriend really died, Katherine pretending to be Elena and kissing Damon and stabbing Uncle John, and Caroline being rushed to the hospital on the brink of death.
It was a lot to process over the summer, and I can't even imagine what this season has in store. They've basically thrown the source books out the window and gone their own direction at a breakneck speed. I heartily approve, and can't wait to see where the action picks up.
The show airs at 8 PM on The CW and is followed by the debut of the kick-ass new version of Nikita starring Maggie Q. To help you keep track of what's on when, check out our complete fall viewing guide.

I hope they keep up the fantastic pacing of this show. You make a great point about it not taking itself too seriously, and that does make a big difference. Twilight takes itself way too seriously, like the subject matter is the stuff of a Shakespearean tragedy (obviously, since Meyer compares them outright to Romeo and Juliet).
Love this show! You're totally right about the breakneck-pace of the plot. Tt defintiely picked up after the first bunch of episodes and never stopped. There's none of the "dragging a small plot point out over half a season" with hints that make it obvious to the viewer early on and make the the characters seem stupid for not seeing it. When they reveal something, it's usually fully resolved or expanded into something else before the end of the next eipsode. (I love True Blood, but the reveals about Sookie have dragged on FOR-EVER.)
I almost stopped watching this show after the first few episdoes, I can't remember which but I think it was the 4th episode that really just hooked me in, an episodes 5 and 6 and everything after just added to it. I loved how quickly they let Elena figure out what Stefan is, I figured it'd be like what you said Jen, and drag it out forever w/ so many obvious hints to Elena that she'd seem like an idiot. The pacing on this show really is it's highlight, but it's extremely closely followed by Ian Somerholder and all his delicious dialogue.
Agreed. On any other show they would have had the vampire reveal happen late in the season and Katherine probably wouldn't have shown up until the 3rd season. Their pacing is really the key to the show's appeal, while they aren't taking themselves too seriously, the rate and complexity with which things unfold doesn't pander or belittle their viewer's intelligence. I definitely was ready to write this show off as another Twighlight (talk about insulting one's intelligence), I am glad I gave it a chance.
