As a musical theater geek and a lover of all things John Barrowman, naturally I was excited when BBC America started importing these fabulous reality shows where they cast Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced productions American Idol-style. Sure this format flopped here with Grease and Legally Blonde (though I watched them... and was possibly the only viewer), but it has been a success across the pond as they've done it for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Any Dream Will Do) and The Sound of Music (How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?) and now they are looking to cast the lead adult female role in Oliver! with I'd Do Anything. Those Brits just have better taste in quality programming... or at least can't get enough Webber.
I'm sure a quick internet search would tell me who won and how they fared in reviews on the West End, but why spoil the fun? I knew that this show aired over there a while ago and just played ostrich about it while I sat here patiently waiting for the adorable Graham Norton to walk me through the process. And, well, I don't necessarily even care who wins. I mostly watch this show to see the insane over-the-top antics of Sir ALW, to watch John Barrowman be all dreamy and coach these young girls on how to be leading ladies and watch Denise van Outen butt heads with Barrowman. It's good times. Now it's got Cameron Mackintosh and Barry Humphries (Dame Edna!) on the judging panel and my theater-loving cup completely runneth over. It's even worth suffering through the horrible songs from Oliver! to watch it.
This starts on BBC America tonight at 9 PM. There are other things on... but I ask you... do they have Dame Edna, Captain Jack and someone who gets introduced with Phantom of the Opera music? I think not.

It's shows like this that make me wish I had cable again. Damn!
Also great was the one for the Wizard of Oz. Every time a Dorothy got eliminated, Graham stuck her on her "sad little paper moon" that she then rode into the sky (rafters). Brilliant.
Just as a quick note, Oliver is not a Webber play :-)
And ALW is a Lord now. Oh yes, the Dorothys send off was quite funny - far better than the Nancy one. Get that on your tellys instead! Damn that Denise van Outen though for marrying the Mead....lucky lady.
That's why it says "Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced productions," but I was confused for a second too!
Except ALW didn't/doesn't produce Oliver! either - Sir Cameron Mackintosh did/does. But you meet him later in the series...
I love these shows too!I didn't see the Grease one, but I did watch Legally Blonde. It just wasn't as fun as the British stuff. I missed the Wizard of Oz, damn. I'll have to see if I can get it off the web. Between these shows, The Choir and Top Gear you can't go wrong with BBC America.
Is Andrew Lloyd Webber producing the *current* production of Oliver, the one that they're casting for with this reality show? Maybe that's what makes it an 'ALW-produced production.' In which case the wording would be correct.
I LOVED Grease. Wished Derek would have won. Thanks for letting us know about this Oliver show. Now I'll have to try to find the Wizard of OZ one.
Since Joseph and marrying Denise, what has Lee done?

Much in line with the thinking of the people behind such a bill.
Disco is music for dancing, and people will always want to dance.
