Monday, January 17, 2011: Being Human

Everyone gets all up-in-arms about U.S. remakes of British and Australian TV shows, and with good reason: They are often terrible. But it looks like Syfy may have actually gotten Being Human right. I mean, of all the channels the show could have turned up on, Syfy seems like the perfect fit. A werewolf and a vampire who are friends and roommates in an apartment haunted by the ghost of a former tenant? That seems right at home on the channel that's already importing Teen Merlin and airing a show like Eureka.

Plus, casting Sams Witwer and Huntington was a pretty major coup. Darth Vader's video-game apprentice and Smallville's Doomsday as the vampire? The star of Fanboys and the big-screen Jimmy Olsen as the werewolf? Okay, the ghost (Meaghan Rath) is a Canadian actress who's virtually unknown in the States, but the show will be airing in Canada on the Space channel (their Syfy), so it's a smart move. And since the series looks to be following the British TV series' storyline, it's guaranteed to be at least as good as that one, right? [Irate yells and threats of bodily harm.] Okay, okay, nothing can be as good as the original. But maybe this can come close? [Murmured grumbles of assent] It's agreed, then.

Being Human (US version) premieres tonight at 9/8C on Syfy, opposite new episodes of The Cape, The Bachelor, Lie to Me, Two and a Half Men, Jersey Shore, Bad Girls Club, Cake Boss, Bridalplasty, Greek, Intervention, American Pickers and Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.
