Sunday, January 9, 2011: The Cape

I can't think of a show I'm looking forward to more than The Cape. Maybe it's because I'm a comic-book nerd who's been disappointed by No Ordinary Family (and Heroes before that, and Birds of Prey before that...), but I just want to see a straightforward superhero TV show. Not a show about a family with powers just trying to be a family (despite doing things each week that would be preposterous even in a comic book) -- a show about heroes in costumes fighting villains in costumes, without crapping all over an established property that it will inevitably get wrong. The Cape really seems like just what the Doctor Strange ordered.

Granted, The Cape reminds me a little of The Hood, a Marvel Comics criminal who wears a magical cloak, but this guy is actually a framed cop who trains with a carnival of bank robbers (hello, Circus of Crime!) to become a crimefighter, because the world believes he's dead, and a serial killer. He takes on the persona of his son's comic-book hero, The Cape, and fights gangsters who have scales as well as the real serial killer, who's also a masked billionaire (hello, Batman!).The cast is great -- James Frain as thepsycho, Keith David as the ringmaster, Summer Glau as a blogger, Vinnie Jones as the gangster -- and the CGI on the practically prehensile cape isn't too bad, either. I'm assuming the show will eventually disappoint me, but hopefully I'll make it through the two-hour premiere with hope for the future.

The Cape premieres tonight on NBC, opposite new Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, Family Guy, Cleveland Show, Undercover Boss, Californication, Episodes, Bridalplasty, Kendra and Sarah Palin's Alaska. But it repeats tomorrow, and airs every Monday from then on. Gossip Girl fans, take note.
