Wednesday, January 5, 2010: People's Choice Awards

The first awards show of 2011 is tonight and it means as much to a celebrity as winning a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award. Nope it's not the VMA's or the one where they get a surfboard for winning, but rather the People's Choice Awards. It's one of the few televised awards shows that allows pretty much anyone to vote for who should be nominated, who should win, and in some cases, what categories there should be across television, film and music. Basically, it's a free-for-all with no real criteria for the quality of work, which explains why Grown Ups and Valentine's Day are up for Favorite Comedy Movie, Dear John is in the Favorite Drama Movie category (alongside Inception and The Social Network nonetheless), and shows like Hellcats and Keeping Up with the Kardashians are even in categories (that aren't Most Mind-Numbing TV Show to Watch). I guess we should kinda expect this though when The Hills Audrina Patridge is one of the people chosen to announce the nominees for the award show. Perhaps let's aim to set higher (and more consistent) standards next time, to those of you who actually voted.

Hosted by Queen Latifah, the 37th annual People's Choice Awards will include performances by Diddy-Dirty Money and Kid Rock and appearances by Malin Akerman, Julie Bowen, Michael Chiklis, Miranda Cosgrove, Kaley Cuoco, Taye Diggs, Lisa Edelstein, Zac Efron, Neil Patrick Harris, Teri Hatcher, the Kardashians, Minka Kelly, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Hugh Laurie, Taylor Lautner, Zachary Levi, AnnaLynne McCord, Leighton Meester, Stephen Moyer, Conan O'Brien, Jerry O'Connell, Jim Parsons, Pauley Perrette, Katy Perry, Natalie Portman, Emma Roberts, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Swift and Kate Walsh. Yeah it's a pretty diverse attendance of celebrities (or whatever word you can use to categorize them) to say the least.

The mostly-poorly-chosen nominees will be revealed as winners or losers (and some, both) tonight at 9 PM on CBS.
